2. For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her by Simon and Garfunkel
What I dream I had: Pressed in organdy; Clothed in crinoline of smoky Burgundy; Softer than the rain. I wandered empty streets Down past the shop displays. I heard cathedral bells Tripping down the alley ways, As I walked on. And when you ran to me Your cheeks flushed with the night. We walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight, I held your hand. And when I awoke and felt you warm and near, I kissed your honey hair with my grateful tears. Oh I love you, girl. Oh, I love you. |

3. Van Morrison - Into The Mystic
We were born before the wind Also younger than the sun Ere the bonnie boat was won as we sailed into the mystic Hark, now hear the sailors cry Smell the sea and feel the sky Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it I don't have to fear it And I want to rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old And magnificently we will flow into the mystic When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it I don't have to fear it And I want to rock your gypsy soul Just like way back in the days of old And together we will flow into the mystic Come on girl... |

It's my ear worm every time I cycle across the GG bridge, cuz that's the only place I've ever encountered fog horns. The lyrics are indeed beautiful, but the melody is so evocative it just brings tears to your eyes.

6. Amoreena - Elton John (Tumbleweed Connection 8 of 10)
Lately I've been thinking how much I miss my lady Amoreena's in the cornfield brightening the daybreak Living like a lusty flower, running through the grass for hours Rolling through the hay like a puppy child And when it rains the rain falls down Washing out the cattle town And she's far away somewhere in her eiderdown And she dreams of crystal streams Of days gone by when we would lean Laughing fit to burst upon each other I can see you sitting eating apples in the evening The fruit juice flowing slowly, slowly, slowly Down the bronze of your body Living like a lusty flower, running through the grass for hours Rolling through the hay like a puppy child And when it rains the rain falls down Washing out the cattle town And she's far away somewhere in her eiderdown And she dreams of crystal streams Of days gone by when we would lean Laughing fit to burst upon each other Oh if only I could nestle in the cradle of your cabin My arms around your shoulders the windows wide and open While the swallow and the sycamore are playing in the valley Oh I miss you Amoreena like a king bee misses honey And when it rains the rain falls down Washing out the cattle town And she's far away somewhere in her eiderdown And she dreams of crystal streams Of days gone by when we would lean Laughing fit to burst upon each other And when it rains the rain falls down Washing out the cattle town And she's far away somewhere in her eiderdown And she dreams of crystal streams Of days gone by when we would lean Laughing fit to burst upon each other Lately I've been thinking how much I miss my lady Amoreena's in the cornfield brightening the daybreak Living like a lusty flower, running through the grass for hours Rolling through the hay like a puppy child |

These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Some day you'll return to me Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn To be brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptisms of fire I've witnessed all your suffering As the battle raged higher And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hell And the moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line on your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms |

20. Fire And Rain - James Taylor with lyrics
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone Susanne the plans they made put an end to you I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song I just cant remember who to send it to Ive seen fire and I`ve seen rain Ive seen sunny days that I thought would never end Ive seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that Id see you again Wont you look down upon me, Jesus? Youve got to help me make a stand Youve just got to see me through another day My bodys aching and my time is at hand And I wont make it any other way Oh, I`ve seen fire and Ive seen rain Ive seen sunny days that I thought would never end Ive seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that Id see you again Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun Lord knows when the cold wind blows itll turn your head around Well, theres hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things To come Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground Oh, I`ve seen fire and I`ve seen rain Ive seen sunny days that I thought would never end Ive seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that Id see you, baby, one more time again, now Thought Id see you one more time again Theres just a few things coming my way this time around, now Thought Id see you, thought Id see you fire and rain, now |

Last edited Sun Jul 29, 2012, 07:37 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) White bird, in a golden cage, on a winter's day, in the rain. White bird, in a golden cage, alone. The leaves blow, Across the long black road. To the darkened skies, in its rage But the white bird just sits in her cage, unknown. White bird must fly Or she will die White bird, dreams of the aspen trees, with their dying leaves, turning gold. But the white bird just sits in her cage, growing old. White bird must fly or she will die. White bird must fly or she will die. The sunsets come, the sunsets go. The clouds roll by,and the earth turns old. And the young bird's eyes do always glow. She must fly, She must fly, She must fly. White bird, In a golden cage, On a winter's day, in the rain. White bird, In a golden cage alone. White bird must fly or she will die. White bird must fly or she will die. White bird must fly or she will die. |

Songwriters: LENNON, JOHN / MCCARTNEY, PAUL
There are places I remember All my life, though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more In my life I love you more |

Summer Rain taps at my window West wind soft as a sweet dream My love, warm as the sunshine Sitting here by me She's here by me She stepped out of a rainbow Golden hair shining like moonglow Warm lips, soft as her soul Sitting here by me, yeah She's here by me All summer long we spent dancing in the sand And the jukebox kept on playing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" We sailed into the sunset Drifting home, caught by a gulf stream Never gave a thought for tomorrow Just let tomorrow be, now Let tomorrow be She wants to live in the Rockies She says that's where we'll find peace Settle down, raise up a family One to call our own, yeah We'll have a home All summer long we spent grooving in the sand Everybody kept on playing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Winter snows drift by my window North wind blowing like thunder Our love is burning like fire And she's here by me, yeah She's here with me Let tomorow be |

27. Southern Cross with lyrics - Crosby, Stills, and Nash
Last edited Sun Jul 29, 2012, 07:38 AM USA/ET - Edit history (1) Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands. Sailing a reach before a followin' sea. She was makin' for the trades on the outside, And the downhill run to Papeete. Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas. We got eighty feet of'a waterline. Nicely making way. In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you. But on a midnight watch I realized Why twice you ran away. Chorus Think about how many times I have fallen Spirits are using me larger voices callin'. What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten. I have been around the world, Lookin' for that woman/girl, Who knows love can endure. And you know it will. When you see the Southern Cross for the first time You understand now why you came this way. 'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small. But it's as big as the promise - The promise of a comin' day. So I'm sailing for tomorrow - My dreams are a dyin'. And my love is an anchor tied to you - Tied with a silver chain. I have my ship and all her flags are a flyin' She is all that I have left - And music is her name. Think about how many times I have fallen Spirits are using me larger voices callin'. What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten. I have been around the world, Lookin' for that woman/girl Who knows what love endures. And you know she knows. And you know she knows. So we cheated and we lied and we tested. And we never failed to fail; it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested. Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you In the Southern Cross. |

Last edited Sun Jul 29, 2012, 01:56 AM USA/ET - Edit history (2) (lyrics by Robert Hunter)
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music, Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken, Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again, Let it be known there is a fountain, That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, When there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. But if you fall you fall alone, If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way, I would take you home. If I knew the way, I would take you home. |

Sad and haunting lyrics.
There's gotta be a record of you some place You gotta be on somebody's books The lowdown - a picture of your face Your injured looks The sacred and profane The pleasure and the pain Somewhere your fingerprints remain concrete And it's your face I'm looking for on every street A ladykiller - regulation tattoo Silver spurs on his heels Says - what can I tell you as I'm standing next to you She threw herself under my wheels Oh it's a dangerous road And a hazardous load And the fireworks over liberty expode in the heat And it's your face I'm looking for on every street A three-chord symphony crashes into space The moon is hanging upside down I don't know why it is I'm still on the case It's a ravenous town And you still refuse to be traced Seems to me such a waste And every victory has a taste that's bittersweet And it's your face I'm looking for on every street |

37. "Albatross" by Judy Collins from her album "Wildflowers"
Even without the beautiful music and Judy's amazing voice, it's a great poem.
Judy Collins Albatross The lady comes to the gate dressed in lavender and leather Looking North to the sea she finds the weather fine She hears the steeple bells ringing through the orchard All the way from town She watches seagulls fly Silver on the ocean stitching through the waves The edges of the sky Many people wander up the hills From all around you Making up your memories and thinking they have found you They cover you with veils of wonder as if you were a bride Young men holding violets are curious to know if you have cried And tell you why And ask you why Either way you answer Lace around the collars of the blouses of the ladies Flowers from a Spanish friend of the family The embroid'ry of your life holds you in And keeps you out but you survive Imprisoned in your bones Behind the isinglass windows of your eyes And in the night the iron wheels rolling through the rain Down the hills through the long grass to the sea And in the dark the hard bells ringing with pain Come away alone Even now by the gate with you long hair blowing And the colors of the day that lie along your arms You must barter your life to make sure you are living And the crowd that has come You give them the colors And the bells and wind and the dream Will there never be a prince who rides along the sea and the mountains Scattering the sand and foam into amethyst fountains Riding up the hills from the beach in the long summer grass Holding the sun in his hands and shattering the isinglass? Day and night and day again and people come and go away forever While the shining summer sea dances in the glass of your mirror While you search the waves for love and your visions for a sign The knot of tears around your throat is crystallizing into your design And in the night the iron wheels rolling through the rain Down the hills through the long grass to the sea And in the dark the hard bells ringing with pain Come away alone Come away alone...with me. |

You'll remember me when the west wind moves Among the fields of barley You can tell the sun in his jealous sky When we walked in fields of gold So she took her love for to gaze awhile Among the fields of barley In his arms she fell as her hair came down Among the fields of gold Will you stay with me will you be my love Among the fields of barley And you can tell the sun in his jealous sky When we walked in fields of gold I never made promises lightly And there have been some that I've broken But I swear in the days still left We'll walk in fields of gold We'll walk in fields of gold I never made promises lightly And there have been some that I've broken But I swear in the days still left We'll walk in fields of gold We'll walk in fields of gold Many years have passed since those summer days Among the fields of barley See the children run as the sun goes down As you lie in fields of gold You'll remember me when the west wind moves Among the fields of barley You can tell the sun in his jealous sky When we walked in fields of gold When we walked in fields of gold When we walked in fields of gold |

George Michael on the death of a lover...the pain behind the lyrics makes my heart ache.
********** And, one that has special significance for me, as it makes me think of my brother who died last year at the age of 40. At the funeral service, the pastor, using the English translation of my brother's last name, called him "Richard of the Light". |

42. Fleetwood Mac - Songbird
For you, there'll be no more crying, For you, the sun will be shining, And I feel that when I'm with you, It's alright, I know it's right To you, I'll give the world To you, I'll never be cold 'Cause I feel that when I'm with you, It's alright, I know it's right. And the songbirds are singing, Like they know the score, And I love you, I love you, I love you, Like never before. And I wish you all the love in the world, But most of all, I wish it from myself. And the songbirds keep singing, Like they know the score, And I love you, I love you, I love you, Like never before, like never before. |
