Peregrine Took (4,153 posts)
My rich, young neighbors are having another one of their intimate dinner parties tonight.
About a dozen or so of Chicago's young elite have gathered 'round the patio table, sipping wine and laughing and talking quietly as they dine in their hosts half a primo city block long backyard.
After dinner the girls will sit and sip more wine and gossip while the guys play hoops or other games. Then, after it gets dark, they will all gather round for coffee and dessert with soft music playing in the background and citronella candles glowing all around the patio. Life is good for the uber wealthy.

when i lived in a poor neighborhood my neighbors were FAR more likely to have these huge rowdy block parties, i'm afraid to ask how they paid for them, but they had a lot more refreshments than just wine and coffee a wine, coffee, dessert, and citronella candle party is not "uber" wealthy party, it's a cheap get-together probably for struggling young people just starting out in life but i get it that you're angry that you weren't invited, you could always call the cops and complain about the noise |

So not only is there the noise (which is somehow amplified on our country lane) but there's the shooting, and the dirt bikes and ATVs or snowmobiles.
I'd love to have the neighbors host a congenial yuppy party of wine and basketball hoops... nope, I've got the equivalent of a country crazy fest when my neighbors let loose. |

for the party two floors below us. We live on the back side of the building overlooking a hill side full of deer, turkeys, rabbits and an owl. The woman 2 floor below us has a yard that she gardens, has a bench and it is beautiful. Her yard goes up to the fence that keeps the wild life from entering onto the property.
The woman is mid to late '70's, a retired court stenographer. She still works from time to time as many lawyers will call her to transcribe depositions. Every summer in late July, early August she has a party for friends. Tables are set outside, it is catered, there is wine and wonderful quiet conversations & music. The party just brings a nice quality of living here. Most people in the building are elderly, I'm one of the younger at 55. The older people tend to keep to themselves, so this party is just nice to have. |

Last edited Sat Jul 21, 2012, 02:10 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) I shall tell you about the one I have to contend with.
I don't live on a block, but there is one about a football field away. My neighbors on that block are partying fools. It's the only route back to my house. If I don't take that, I have to hike down a rocky, uneven mountain. One of the neighbors is the mother of a music star who is worth about $500 million and is on the Forbes list of top wealthiest music stars. Every summer they have the block party, to which I am also invited but I never go. I pretty much leave town or if I stay, park my car on a street up the mountain so I can hike out of my house if I need to. Because this party also draws the star and occasionally his superstar wife, it also draws a skazillion people who are not from the block but who are fans who hope to see their music idol. Needless to say, it is a mob scene. The music beat of the giant speakers actually makes my house shake and there is no escaping it, not even with earplugs. That is why I sometimes just leave. I actually like the court stenographer party. If I could have that, I would. If I couldn't, I'd go with the Chicago elite. Anybody wanna' trade neighbor parties?
Cher on edit: I would like to say that I actually like to see people enjoying the outdoors with a party. But there are limits, and mob scenes are one of them. |

We had a Bastille Day party - with wine, merguez sausages, desserts, coffee, after dinner drinks, herbal cigarettes and pétanque. You'd have hated it.
And no, we're not rich. Everybody brought a dish and some wine. Doesn't take much to share food with friends. |
