Just had a close encounter with a peregrine about an hour ago.

I've never seen a raptor that up close and personal before, even in a zoo.

We were sitting out by the herb garden, between our house and the neighbors. It glided in just over the edge of the neighbor's garage, pulled a u-bee between our houses and took off. We could see every marking, every wing. Damn was it pretty. It couldn't have been more than 6-8' above us. We made the sheltie hide under a table for a while. I know she's too large for a peregrine, but we didn't want to take any chances. That's one of those "wish I had the video camera" moments.

2. They are in our 'hood and also in Midtown ATL among the high-rises.

They are just amazing beautiful creatures. Kinda yucky to find pigeon parts in the parking deck but that's nature.

4. Yesterday I had a hummingbird encounter.

I was at the window when one approached to take nectar from the flowers in front of the bushes. It hesitated when it saw me and hoovered, then darted to the side, hoovered some more, then darted back to where she was. She did this a couple more times probably to see if I would move. Couldn't have been more than four feet from the window. I had a great view!

9. Do you ever wonder if hummingbirds say to each other, "I just had a human experience" ?

10. All the time.

I had one of the birds set up a nest in my back yard one summer and got to see her around every fifteen minutes or so. She got to the point where she got use to us and as long as we went about our business she didn't pay us any attention.

And one of them approached me at night. It was something that was too big to be a bug. it kept coming in and hoovering around my head, and then changed position. Like it was trying to figure out, "what the fuck is this?"

14. A question occurred to me....

Geese fly in a "V" formation........

....do hummingbirds travel in a "HUM-V"?

13. They hunt over here for the morning doves and young rabbits. So do the red-tail hawks.

It's that time of year where there are baby bunnies EVERYWHERE!!! Shortly before the flyover, my wife and I were having a conversation with a young one that was casually munching less than 8 feet away. Fortunately it decided to move into some nearby shade for a nap before the falcon came by or we would have been treated to a rather unpleasant visual experience instead.

16. A few years ago....

...I was driving thru rural area near my aunt's house when I saw a movement over in a nearby pasture. Stopped to look, and saw a large bird moving around oddly, with one wing extended. Thinking it migh be injured, I got out and walked over to it. To my surprise, I saw a big red-tailed hawk on the ground with a big black king snake coiled around it. I think the hawk had seen the snake and decided it would make a good dinner, but before it could escape, the snake got coiled around it so it couldn't fly. The snake had its fangs in the hawks leg, and the hawk had its talons on the snake in a death grip. I grabbed the snake behind its head, and with some difficulty, got it unwrapped from the hawk. The hawk flew off to a nearby tree, cussing at me for taking his dinner away.

It was an amazing episode, to see these two wild creatures in a life-or-death struggle.
