Introducing Discussionist: A new forum by the creators of DU

Tue Jun 19, 2012, 09:00 PM

Just got a phone political polling call. I hung up when

the recorded voice said that I would receive a two day trip to the Bahamas for my answers.

Did I goof?

4. Good choice. They were trying to get you out of the country on election day.

Thank you for not falling for those Republican tricks!

5. I knew there had to be an angle.

I always vote straight Democratic Party no matter how much nose pinching is required.

6. You too? I thought they might just be harrassing me.

BTW, it is a scam. After you "win" the trip, they ask you for your credit card number for "taxes" and such. Total phishing scam. Glad you hung up!

7. I knew it was a scam, but also a chance for humor at DU.

I only get fooled major things not the mundane. lol.

BS detector is robust; common sense and "want to believe" flawed..

8. I wait for the beep to enter a message and yell "FUCK YOU!"

In the mid '80s, I was in college on the health insurance the campus offered (reasonable rate). I got an automated call where the first question was "Are you paying too much for health insurance?" In a deadpan voice, I responded "no". It continued with something like "Of course. To lower your rate enter your (list of information) at the tone." I had some really sick King Crimson on the turntable that I'd turned down to answer the phone. This was a pretty powerful stereo with equally powerful speakers. That's all I left after the beep.

9. years ago I got a survey in the mail from my GOP congressman

The questions were printed on computer punch cards, I guess to make them more official looking. One question was: If guns were made illegal, do you think criminals and organized crime members would voluntarily give up their guns? I wrote in "Yes, I'm an optimist." Another question was: Do you think you have the right to protect yourself and your family from a viscious criminal attack? I wrote, "No, I'm a pacifist."
Of course the Congessman had a guest editorial the next week promoting our sacred 2nd amendment rights and stating that a recent poll conducted by his office found 98% of his constituents supported the right to bear arms.

11. Just got another one of those calls. Hung up.

I do not want a 2-day cruise to the Bahamas. Why do they keep calling?
