I don't excuse the violence, but I'm guessing he was provoked a bit. Dude has anger issues, it seems, probably caused by playing scrabble-style video games. I call for a Congressional investigation.

Paparazzi are vultures & parasites with no redeeming qualities.

This is a difficult situation to judge, being neither a fan of Hollywood "stars" or of their predatory paparazzi parasites.

That said as a working man, if anyone follows me around with a camera snapping, I reserve the right to kick his balls and tell the motherfucker I'm going to stick his telephoto lens up his ass.

Even with the highly selective photos released, you can see he was lunging with both hands, possibly reaching for the camera, but not punching. He really needs to hire a security guard to protect him from himself. And yes, get some help with anger management, as the paparazzi seem to target him.
