4. Throwing stones

Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky, brush in some clouds and sea
Call it home for you and me.
A peaceful place or so it looks from space
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace, is the human face.
But afraid, we may lay our home to waste.
There's a fear down here we can't forget hasn't got a name just yet
Always awake, always around singing ashes to ashes all fall down.
Now watch as the ball revolves and the nighttime calls
And again the hunt begins and again the bloodwind calls
By and by again, the morning sun will rise
But the darkness never goes from some men's eyes.
It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets
Stalking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat, you and me, you and me.
Click, flashblade in ghetto night. Rudies looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley roll them bones. Need that cash to feed that jones
And the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Commissars and pin-striped bosses role the dice
Any way they fall guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray, selling guns instead of food today.
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Heartless powers try to tell us what to think
If the spirit's sleeping, then the flesh is ink.
History's page, it is thusly carved in stone
The future's here, we are it, we are on our own.
If the game is lost then we're all the same
No one left to place or take the blame.
We will leave this place an empty stone
Or this shinning ball of bule we can call our home
So the kids they dance, they shake their bones
While the politicians are throwing stones
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.
Shipping powders back and forth
Singing "black goes south while white comes north"
And the whole world full of petty wars
Singing "I got mine and you got yours."
And the current fashions set the pace.
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical he rant and rage, Singing "someone got to turn the page"
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing "Just leave well enough alone"
But his pants are down, his cover's blown
And the politicians are throwing stones
So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause its all too clear we're on our own
Picture a bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free
It's dizzying, the possibilities. Ashes, Ashes all fall down.

43. Agreed

I had tickets to the 30th anniversary tour and gave them all up (never know when it will be the last show) to go on a honeymoon for entire fall tour. As you know that didn't happen. I thought it was going to be ugly and it was. I was hoping that things would calm down. I mean Jerry Garcia receiving death threats FFS! My sister started taking me in the mid 70's the 1974 Iowa State Fair show with the wall of sound being my first. After about 1985-86 it was never the same for me. 1989 was the last carefree good year for me. Could have been the products I miss my friends who I only know by nicknames but saw year in and year out for the best part of 25 years. I miss the music. Jerry could razour me in half like a hot wire through butter or gently rain down a musical waterfall of sound that truly did sooth my soul. I didn't go for the party although it was awfully good at times. I went for the 3 hours of pure musical ecstasy why else would you put up with all the cops, all the attempted setups and the DEA. Cheers! The world is a much much darker place and I don't think this darkness is going to give.

13. Nuclear Assault - Critical Mass

&feature=related

CRITICAL MASS
-------- ----
by Nuclear Assault from "Handle With Care" (c) 1989

The bio-sphere, the place we live
It seems like we don't give a damn
Other species flushed down the tubes
We need another race to rape
The way we live, we will destroy
Every other living thing
Till none are left except our race
And then we will destroy ourselves
]Another oil spill
]Atomic waste displaced
]Another forest dies
]Bring on the acid rain
Slightly insane, the type of greed
That makes a world unfit for life
Toxic wastes destroy our seas
While poison gas pollutes the air

A waste of life, while no one cares
The earth becomes a giant tomb
Critical mass will be achieved
And ruins will be all that's left

]Another oil spill
]Atomic waste displaced
]Another forest dies

*groovy solo*

A hell on earth, what we create
Dragging life to death with us
All living things destroyed or used
By shortsighted human beings
We do these things, let them be done
Apathy creates despair
The damamge done will be too great
The world wounded beyond repair

]Another oil spill
]Atomic waste displaced
]Another forest dies

21. We Can Run - Grateful Dead

Lyrics:

We don't own this place, though we act as if we did,
It's a loan from the children of our children's kids.
The actual owners haven't even been born yet.

Bur we never tend the garden and rarely we pay the rent,
Most of it is broken and the rest of it is bent
Put it all on plastic and I wonder where we'll be when the bills hit.

We can run,
But we can't hide from it.
Of all possible worlds,
We only got one:
We gotta ride on it.
Whatever we've done,
We'll never get far from what we leave behind,
Baby, we can run, run, run, but we can't hide.
Oh no, we can't hide.

I'm dumpin' my trash in your back yard
Makin' certain you don't notice really isn't so hard
You're so busy with your guns and all of your excuses to use them.

Well, it's oil for the rich and babies for the poor,
We got everyone believin' that more is more,
If a reckoning comes, maybe we will know what to do then.

All these complications seem to leave no choice,
I heard the tongues of billion speak with just one voice,
Saying, "Just leave all the rest to me,
I need it worse than you, you see."
And then I heard....
The sound of one child crying.

Today I went walking in the amber wind,
There's a hole in the sky where the light pours in
I remembered the days when I wasn't afraid of the sunshine.

But now it beats down on the asphalt land
Like a hammering blow from God's left hand
What little still grows cringes in the shade till the night time.

34. Ask The Fish: LEFTOVER SALMON!

ASK THE FISH

Every "Ask The Fish" is different, unique, musically and lyrically.
Some of the same words and sounds pop up every time, but lots of new
territory is explored as well. Vince always spouts some new
improvisational poetry, making up verses and modifying nursery rhymes to
suit the purposes of the fish, incorporating references to popular culture
and songs, and to the geographical location of that particular show, the
venue, the nearest rivers and environmental concerns, the vibe of the
crowd. The crowd feels the special energy of communication between
performer and audience when the lyrics apply directly to that specific
moment. We can affirm an environmental lesson from the lyrics, but we
don't feel preached at. The sheer joy of dancing is conflated with the
serious concerns of our world, in a progressive prankster approach that
makes you feel good about caring about the fish. Vince can sure make up
some motivational words right there on the spot, and make it sound good.
His vocal phrasings are assorted and appropriate to the words he is making
up and the progression of the musical jam occurring. The music itself is
just as loose as the lyrics, incorporating weird instruments, sound
effects, and bridging and blending styles, rising and falling from the
psychedelic intro to the ripping bluegrass breakdown, the central space jam
in the dream segment, and the climactic soloing. The on-stage anticacious
approaches to instrumentation have been accented with squeaking rubber fish
bath-toys, the celestial sounds of the waterphone (a water-filled metallic
instrument that Mark resonated with a fiddle bow), Tye singing bass notes
in the monastic tradition, and a variety of Hendrixian effects by way of
Drew's pickin' and fiddlin'. "Ask The Fish" is a true Leftover Salmon
original, taking their polyethnic influences and molding them into a fish
form, with each of Leftover Salmon's five members shining and contributing
to the aquatic audio environment. The song is the title track of their
first live album (*Ask The Fish*, ©1995) where the tune clocks in at nearly
9 minutes. Indeed, the song is often the improvisational centerpiece of
Leftover Salmon concert festivities. If you want to really understand why
this is such a great song, just remember, you must ask the fish.

Here is my attempt to transcribe some of Vince's lyrical wanderings
in various live versions of "Ask The Fish." I have incorporated some
lyrics from several versions. Stanzas that are unique to a particular show
are marked with the date, and the basic words that generally occur in some
form in most of the versions are unmarked. Keep in mind it's different
every time, and this is just the way I heard it and it's not all accurate.

><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><> ><>

Lyrics:

"ASK THE FISH" (Leftover Salmon)

Folks, we hate to do this to you at this point. We've got a trail on the
Mayor. The kidnappers have fessed up, and they're putting up a ransom
note. With this instrument right now, what we're gonna do is we're gonna
try to get ahold of the Mayor, through this device, man. We've used it in
the past as a fish locator, but we're gonna try to pull in the Mayor one
time. This thing's called a waterphone, and this one is Mark's fault.
(4/8/95)

You know the waters off of Boston used to be some of the richest fishing
grounds in the entire world. And, well, all the fish seem to be going on
vacation somewhere for a while, until we get our shit together. Here's one
for the fish. (4/11/96)

Fishy
Oh, fish
Where'd all the fish go?
You must ask the fish.
Do you know anything about the water?
Fishy?
That Fulton Fish Market looks mighty empty these days (4/8/95)
you know what I'm saying?
Where'd all the fish go is what I wanna know
Fishy!
Might just have to ask the fish
Fishy!

Well ask the fish 'cause the fish he knows
Ask the fish why the water won't flow
Too many dams and docks in the rivers you know
The fish can't swim when the water don't flow
Fish fishy fish-eye view
He's a-looking at you
What's a fish gonna do
When rivers don't run through
Fishy asking you
What you gonna do

I dreamt I was a red tail hawk (9/27/95)
Flying over the mountains
All the trees were gone
Water was only in the fountains
And the fish were gone
It was a sad sad dawn
And the fog rolled on
But the water and trees were gone
Ask the fish, I think he'll know
Ask the fish where the forest goes
They don't live in trees but I think they'll know
'Cause the fish knows where the water flows

How about a six hundred pound catfish (4/11/96)
Making its way up the Saint Charles River
Ahhhhhh what's going on here?
It's a beautiful sunny day
And there're beautiful white sailboats on the river
And this ix hundred pound catfish is making its way upstream
He gets to this big ol' pipe sticking out of the riverbank
And it's dripping this green toxic smelling ooze
And this big ol' catfish just gets the blues
Wants to know what's going on with his home
You know, trying to figure out, what are these people doing?
First the catfish gets the blues, you know
Then he makes it a little furthur up river to see some more of that
Pretty soon that catfish is gonna start getting pissed
One of these days
There's gonna be an army of about six thousand catfish
Start heading down Mass Ave going
Who doin' that? Who doin' it?
Then it might be a little too late to ask the fish.
What you gotta do?
You gotta get down there to the Saint Charles
And you gotta get a little mask on there
And stick your head under there
And start going balubalabubbububub
In a coupla seconds this fish will walk right up to you
Saying, you may ask the fish
I don't know what you're gonna say, man
But you better have some attention to pay
Ask the fish about the people
Yeah, water spirits dancing in my head
Make me glad the fish aren't all dead
Water spirits dancing in my head
Make me glad that the fish aren't dead
And the fish live on
Ask the fish
'Cause I think he'll know
Used to be a river but it became a green
And I just wonder
what happened to the dream
Too many dams and docks you know
The fish can't swim when the river won't flow

I had a dream about a fish
And I wonder what it means
Dreamt I was a fish trying to get up stream
I wonder about the fish and I wonder what it means
When fish can't get home and I'm having fish dreams

Fish fishy take a fish-eye view
Fish fishy here's looking at you
You gotta question 'em too
Fish are talking to you
What's a fish gonna do
Gotta break on through
Adopt a fish-eye view
Ask the fish

Well, ah, hey fishy fishy
Ask the fish
Fish starting to wonder why it can't get home no more
Like the bud comes toward him and it just flows away like smoke (4/8/95)
And the fish can't get home no more
The fish has a few questions he'd like to ask

Ask the fish and I think you'll know
Ask the fish why the water won't flow
Banks clogged with barges, dams and docks you know
Fish can't swim where the water don't go
Fish fishy take a fish-eye view
Fish fish is a-lookin' at you
Fish asking you to take a fish-eye view

Fishy
Ask the fish

37. Alabama-Pass It on Down

We live in the land of plenty
But many things aren't plenty anymore
Like the water from our sink
They say's not safe to drink
You gotta go and buy it at the store
Now we're told there's a hole in the ozone
Look what's washing on the beach
And Lord, I believe, from the heavens to the seas
We're bringing Mother Nature to her knees

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow, let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

Well there's a change taking place way on the mountains
Acid rain is falling on the leaves
And down in Brazil, the fires are burning still
How we gonna breathe without them trees

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow, let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

There's a place where I live called the Canyon
Where Daddy taught me to swim
And that water, it's so pure
And I'm gonna make sure
Daddy's grandkids can swim there like him

Now we all oughta feel just a little bit guilty
When we look into the eyes of our kids
'Cause brothers it's a fact, if we take and don't put back
They'll have to pay for all we did

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow, let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow, let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow, let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow, let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

Leave it and pass it on down

39. Lay Down Your Weary Tune - Bob Dylan

Hi,
I love this quiet and beautiful song.

The last of leaves fell from the trees
And clung to a new loveís breast
The branches bare like a banjo played
To the winds that listened best

I gazed down in the riverís mirror
And watched its winding strum
The water smooth ran like a hymn
And like a harp did hum

Peace

45. "The Trees Are All Gone" -- Roger McGuinn

The glaciers near the polar camp
Have all begun to melt
Temperatures are on the rise
Far from the southern belt

Water levels shifting tides
On every changing land
Rain forests in the Amazon
Have vanished from our hand

And the trees are all gone
Yeah you know it's all wrong
And the trees are all gone

The people want to eat today
And so they clear the land
Global warming is a concept
They can't understand
But all the politcians now
They have no excuse
They just hide behind their power
And keep us from the truth

Man has tried his suicide
With bigotry and hate
But in the end he'll kill himself
With nothing but his waste

What will finally happen when
The farm lands turn to dust
When only rich receive the food
And nothing's left for us

But all the politcians now
They have no excuse
They just hide behind their power
And keep us from the truth

46. Native American grind/metal band Resistant Culture has a lot of stuff

here's Ecocide:

Lakes on fire
Soil cracked and dry
The earth is bleeding
Black rain from the sky

This is ecocide

Toxic disorder
Man made despair
Planetary meltdown
Cancer everywhere

I dont want to live in your synthetic reality
A future without nature is tearing down our dreams

Clear-cut the heart
Strip-mine the soul
Nature for profit
Its all out of control

This is ecocide
Earth and water
Fire and sky
Not to be altered
Or nothing will survive

51. ...lest I forget Gato Barbieri's *Europa*

&feature=related

Yep. The man surely still has *it* after all these years. Shame most folks are not aware of him - and nor, of his awesome talent. A truly (unrecognized) legend, imo. ~

On edit - not a bad piano solo thrown in there from some other (sadly) unknown person...yet talent just oozing out of his sides. Amazing just how much other talent is *out there* all this time yet, thanks to youtube at the moment...we can share on these otherwise, not seen talents and appreciate the delightful musical gifts they bring ~
