Post your favorite/great song lyrics!

Great lyrics can inspire creativity. Post up peeps!

Penny Lane

In penny lane there is a barber showing photographs
Of every head he's had the pleasure to know.
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say hello.

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar,
The little children laugh at him behind his back.
And the banker never wears a mack
In the pouring rain, very strange.

Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back

In penny lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the queen.
He likes to keep his fire engine clean,
It's a clean machine.

Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
A four of fish and finger pies
In summer, meanwhile back

Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout
The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray
And tho' she feels as if she's in a play
She is anyway.

In penny lane the barber shaves another customer,
We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim.
And then the fireman rushes in
From the pouring rain, very strange.

Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back.
Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies,
Penny lane.

Many's the time I've been mistaken,
And many times confused
And I've often felt forsaken,
And certainly misused.
But it's all right, it's all right,
I'm just weary to my bones
Still, you don't expect to be
Bright and Bon Vivant
So far away from home,
So far away from home.

I don't know a soul who's not been battered
Don't have a friend who feels at ease
Don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to it's knees.
But it's all right, all right,
We've lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on,
I wonder what went wrong,
I can't help it
I wonder what went wrong.

And I dreamed I was flying.
I dreamed my soul rose unexpectedly,
And looking back down on me,
Smiled reassuringly,
And I dreamed I was dying.
And far above, my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty,
Drifting away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying.

We come on a ship we call the Mayflower,
We come on a ship that sailed the moon
We come at the age's most uncertain hour
And sing the American tune
But it's all right, it's all right
You can't be forever blessed
Still, tomorrow's gonna be another working day
And I'm trying to get some rest,
That's all, I'm trying to get some rest.

"Kashmir" Led Zeppelin

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.

Oh, I been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin'

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin' through Kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Ohh.

When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Let me take you there. Let me take you there

Ike willis (rhythm guitar, vocals)
Ray white (rhythm guitar, vocals)
Bobby martin (keyboards, vocals)
Alan zavod (keyboards)
Scott thunes (bass)
Chad wackerman (drums)

Ooh...
A real hologram!
We sure do!
I mean: not real, but almost a real hologram

Hey there, people, Im bobby brown
They say Im the cutest boy in town
My car is fast, my teeth is shiney
I tell all the girls they can kiss my heinie
Tiny heinie ho!
Here I am at a famous school
Im dressin sharp
Im actin cool
I got a cheerleader here wants to help with my paper
Let her do all the work n maybe later I'll rape her

Oh God I am the american dream
I do not think Im too extreme
An Im a handsome sonofabitch
Im gonna get a new glove n be real rich
Get a good, get a good, get a good, get a good job...

Womens liberation
Came creepin all across the nation
I tell you people, I was not ready
When I fucked this dyke by the name of freddie
She made a little speech then,
Aw, she tried to make me say when
She had my balls in a vice, but she left the dick
I guess it's still hooked on, but now it shoots too quick

Oh God I am the american dream,
But now I smell like vaseline
An Im a miserable sonofabitch
Am I a boy or a lady...i don't know which
I wonder...wonder...hi-ho silver!...

So I went out n bought me a leisure suit
I jingle my change, but Im still kinda cute
Got a job doin radio promo
An none of the jocks even tell I'm a homo
Eventually me n a friend
Sorta drifted along into s&m
I can take about an hour on the tower of power
Long as I gets a little golden shower
Oh God I am the american dream
With a spindle up my butt till it makes me scream
An I'll do anything to get ahead
Hi-ho silver!
Oh god, oh god, Im so fantastic!
Hi-ho silver!
And my name is bobby brown

And my name is bobby brown
Hi-ho silver!
Way!
And my name is bobby brown

Truckin'

Truckin' got my chips cashed in. Keep truckin', like the do-dah man
Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin' on.

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street.
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street.
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.

Dallas, got a soft machine; Houston, too close to New Orleans;
New York's got the ways and means; but just won't let you be, oh no.

Most of the cast that you meet on the streets speak of true love,
Most of the time they're sittin' and cryin' at home.
One of these days they know they better get goin'
Out of the door and down on the streets all alone.

Truckin', like the do-dah man. Once told me "You've got to play your hand"
Sometimes your cards ain't worth a dime, if you don't lay'em down,

Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurres to me What a long, strange trip it's been.

What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same
Livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine,
All a friend can say is "Ain't it a shame?"

Truckin', up to Buffalo. Been thinkin', you got to mellow slow
Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin' on.

Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window.
Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again
I'd like to get some sleep before I travel,
But if you got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in.

Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowlin' pin.
Knocked down, it get's to wearin' thin. They just won't let you be, oh no.

You're sick of hangin' around and you'd like to travel;
Get tired of travelin' and you want to settle down.
I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin',
Get out of the door and light out and look all around.

Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me;
Other times I can barely see.
Lately it occurres to me What a long, strange trip it's been.

Truckin', I'm a goin' home. Whoa whoa baby, back where I belong,
Back home, sit down and patch my bones, and get back truckin' on.
Hey now get back truckin' home.

7. Southern Cross - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Fri May 25, 2012, 12:08 AM
May 2012

This song always takes me back to a certain period in my life. Strong memory, bittersweet emotions. Good tunes can do that, and this is on of the best.

Got out of town on a boat
Goin' to Southern Islands
Sailing a reach
Before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades

On the outside
And the downhill run
To Papeete
Off the wind on this heading
Lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline
Nicely making way

In a noisy bar in Avalon
I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized
Why twice you ran away

Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me
Cannot be forgotten

(Been around the world)
I have been around the world
(Lookin')
Lookin' for that woman-girl
(Who knows she knows)
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross
For the first time
You understand now
Why you came this way

'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from
Is so small
But it's as big as the promise
The promise of a comin' day

So I'm sailing for tomorrow
My dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you
Tied with a silver chain

I have my ship
And all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left
And music is her name

Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me
Cannot be forgotten

(I been around the world)
I have been around the world
(Lookin')
Lookin' for that woman-girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will
And you know it will, yes

So we cheated and we lied
And we tested
And we never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do

You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along
Make me forget about loving you
And the Southern Cross

8. There are so many but Robert Hunter's "Box of Rain"
Fri May 25, 2012, 12:37 AM
May 2012

only becomes more meaningful to me the older I get.

I spoke the final chorus at my mom's memorial service almost three years ago.
____________

Look out of any window, any morning, any evening, any day.
Maybe the sun is shining, birds are singing,
No rain is falling from a heavy sky.
What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago.

Walk out of any doorway, feel your way, feel your way like the day before.
Maybe you'll find direction, around some corner where it's been waiting to meet you.
What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you are sleeping?
The please don't be surprised when you find me dreaming too.

Look into any eyes you find by you, you can see clear to another day,
Maybe been seen before, through other eyes on other days while going home.
What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed one afternoon, long ago.

Walk into splintered sunlight,
Inch your way through dead dreams to another land.
Maybe you're tired and broken,
Your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear

What do you want me to do, to do for you to see you through?
A box of rain will ease the pain, and love will see you through.

Just a box of rain, wind and water
Believe it if you need it, if you don't, just pass it on
Sun and shower, wind and rain
In and out the window like a moth before a flame

And it's just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there,
Believe it if you need it, or leave it if you dare.
And it's just a box of rain, or a ribbon for your hair;
Such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.

May 2012

by The Rutles

Working up a fever in a one-horse town
was a Jockey by the name of Joe
He didn't have a lot of you might call luck
but he had a lot of get up and go

Get up and go
Get up and go
Get up and go back home
Get up and go
Get up and go
Get up and go back home

Tall in the saddle in a one-horse town
Joey knew someday he'd hit the road
He traded with a dealer for a pick-up truck
And went looking for a medium load

Get up and go
Get up and go
Get up and go back home
Get up and go
Get up and go
Get up and go back home

Cruising down the highway doing sixty-five
in the middle of the double white line
His foot down on the gas and his head in the clouds
He didn't see the one-way sign

Get up and go
Get up and go
Get up and go back home
Get up and go
Get up and go
Get up and go back home

secret heart
what are you made of?
what are you so afraid of?
could it be three simple words
or the fear of being overheard?
whats wrong?
let her in on your secret heart

secret heart
why so mysterious?
why so secret, why so serious?
maybe you're just acting tough
maybe you're just not man enough?
whats wrong?
let her in on your secret heart

the very secret you're trying to conceal
is the very same one you're dying to reveal
go tell her how you feel

secret heart
come out and share it
this loneliness, few can bear it
could it have something to do with
admitting that you just cant go through it alone?
let her in on your secret heart

11. Don't Let It Bring You Down
Fri May 25, 2012, 02:32 AM
May 2012

By Neil Young

Old man lying
by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping
down the alley at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Blind man running
through the light
of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down
to the river of sight
And you can really understand,
Red lights flashing
through the window
in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying
in a gutter in the lane,
If you're walking home alone.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Just find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Just find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

12. Logical Song - Supertramp
Fri May 25, 2012, 06:02 AM
May 2012

When I was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical
And all the birds in the trees
Well they'd be singing so happily
Joyfully, playfully watching me

But then they send me away
To teach me how to be sensible
Logical, responsible, practical
And then they showed me a world
Where I could be so dependable
Clinical, intellectual, cynical

There are times when all the world's asleep
The questions run too deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am

I say, "Now what would you say for they calling you a radical
Liberal, fanatical, criminal?"
Won't you sign up your name? We'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable
Oh, ch-ch-check it out yeah

At night when all the world's asleep
The questions run so deep for such a simple man
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned?
I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am
Who I am, who I am, who I am

'Coz I'm feeling so illogical
D-d-digital
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Unbelievable
B-b-bloody marvelous

Strangely prescient

Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is pilin’ up, we struggle and we scrape
We’re all boxed in, nowhere to escape

City’s just a jungle; more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, tryin' to get away
I was raised in the country, I been workin’ in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down

Got nothin' for you, I had nothin' before
Don’t even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pourin’ down
Nothing you can sell me, I’ll see you around

All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well, the devil’s in the alley, mule’s in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinkin’ 'bout the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleepin' in Rosie’s bed

Walkin' through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feelin' like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you’re sorry, I’m sorry too

Some people will offer you their hand and some won’t
Last night I knew you, tonight I don’t
I need somethin’ strong to distract my mind
I’m gonna look at you ’til my eyes go blind

Well I got here followin' the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well my ship’s been split to splinters and it’s sinkin' fast
I’m drownin’ in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it’s light and it’s free
I’ve got nothin’ but affection for all those who’ve sailed with me

Everybody movin’ if they ain’t already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interestin' right about now

My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waitin’ to be kind
So give me your hand and say you’ll be mine

Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Chocolate on my fingers, icing on my lips
Sugar diabetes and blubber on my hips

So I can go downstairs and cruise

Chocolate covered creme filled cookie blues

I hide’em in a cabinet, I keep’em in a jar
For emergency’s you know I keep’em in the
Glove compartment of my car
And I can’t live without’em
They git’ me higher than I can get on booze
I got them oreo creme sandwich
Chocolate covered creme filled cookie blues

Doctor says I’m crazy
You better give’em up and quick
Or you’ll be pushing up daisies because
Boy you definitely sick

I love you

It seems a waste
To reminisce about you
Because i want to keep you mine and mine alone.
I don't really wanna remember you
I mean, it's embarassing
Grinning to myself.
Eventhough you were late coming home
Tired from a late night
You picked me up in your arms
Even in my dreams, i knew it.

I miss you so
I couldn't feel anymore helpless
I miss you so
I'll always love you.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/ai_otsuka/daisuki_da_yo_english.html ]
Did you know,
What i wished for
That night
When we went for a drive?
Did you know,
That i saw our happiness
In the sky we looked up at together?
You took this one 'me' laying there
Made her beautiful and were always there for me.
I miss you so
I don't wanna be any further away from you
I miss you so
I'll always love you.

I miss you so
I couldn't feel anymore helpless
I miss you so
I'll always love you.

I will always, always and forever
I will always love you. la la la.

I’ve been up and down and ‘round and ‘round and back again,
Been so many places, can’t remember where or when,
And my only boss was the clock on the wall, and my only friend
Never really was a friend at all.

I’ve traded love for pennies, sold my soul for less,
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time;
I’ve turned inside out and ‘round about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again.

Once I had myself a million, now I’ve only got a dime;
Difference don’t seem quite fair today;
With a nickel or a million, I was searchin’ all the time
For something that I never lost or left behind.

I’ve traded love for pennies, sold my soul for less,
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time;
I’ve turned inside out and ‘round about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again.

Now I’m in my second circle, and I’m headin’ for the top,
Learned a lot of things along the way,
I’ll be careful while I’m climbin’, ‘cause it hurts like hell to drop,
And when you’re down, nobody gives a damn anyway.

I’ve traded love for pennies, sold my soul for less,
Lost my ideals in that long tunnel of time;
I’ve turned inside out and ‘round about and back and then
Found myself right back where I started again.

18. and this one: "One Tin Soldier"
Fri May 25, 2012, 04:11 PM

("The Legend of Billy Jack&quot

Listen, children, to a story that was written long ago
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley far below
On the mountain was the treasure, buried deep beneath a stone
And the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend,
Do it in the name of Heaven, you can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after,
One tin soldier rides away...

So, the people of the valley sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill
Came an answer from the kingdom, "With our brothers, we will share
All the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there."

Now the valley cried with anger, "Mount your horses, draw your swords!"
And they killed the mountain people so, they won their just reward
Now, they stood beside the treasure, on the mountain dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend,
Do it in the name of Heaven, you can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after,
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend,
Do it in the name of Heaven, you can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after,
One tin soldier rides away.......

19. Wise Up

May 2012

Aimee Mann

It's not
What you thought
When you first began it
You got
What you want
Now you can hardly stand it though,
By now you know
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up

You're sure
There's a cure
And you have finally found it
You think
One drink
Will shrink you 'til you're underground
And living down
But it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up

Prepare a list of what you need
Before you sign away the deed
'Cause it's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
'Til you wise up
No, it's not going to stop
So just...give up

20. Throw Your Arms Around Me
Fri May 25, 2012, 04:21 PM
May 2012

Hunters & Collectors

I will come for you at nighttime
I will raise you from your sleep
I will kiss you in four places
As I go running along your street
I will squeeze the life out of you
You will make me laugh and make me cry
And we will never forget it
You will make me call your name
And I'll shout it to the blue summer sky
And we may never meet again
So shed your skin and let's get started
And you will throw your arms around me
Yeah, you will throw your arms around me
I dreamed of you at nighttime
And I watched you in your sleep
I met you in high places
I touched your head and touched your feet
So if you disappear out of view
You know I will never say goodbye
And though I try to forget it
You will make me call your name
And I'll shout it to the blue summer sky...
And we may never meet again...
So shed your skin and let's get started
And you will throw your arms around me
Yeah, you will throw your arms around me
Oh...yeah...
Ohhh yeah...
You will throw your arms around me...
Yeah, you will throw your arms around me....

May 2012

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed and deranged
I have existed for years but very little has changed
I'm the tool of the government and industry too
For I am destined to rule and regulate you
I might be vile and pervasive with the stuff that I say
You might think I'm delicious but you can't look away

I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozing out from your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights that you are sold

But that's not the only TV themed song in my arsenal...

Television screen, your face turn green
Don't listen to the news
Don't know what you hear, they never make it clear
They like to make you stay confused
Propaganda time
The official line
You're hungry, you get fed
An elastic smile
You must admire their style
But they're just a talking head

Television voice don't give you any choice
You only hear the man
Don't get taken in, you don't know where they been
'Cos it's a complex plan
They keep you nice and quiet
Even control your diet
You're hungry you get fed
Teach you to be meek
'Til all you are is weak
'Til you're just a talking head

Televisions screen, this ought to be a dream
Remember what I say
Don't be hypnotized by sugar-coated lies
Don't switch it on today
It's the way things are
From the babble jar
You're hungry you get fed
But if you play the game
You become the same
Another talking head

I got holes in my shoes, I got holes in my teeth
I got holes in my socks, I can't get no sleep

And I got patches on the patches

Well they used to be blue
When they used to be new
And when they used to be clean

-AC/DC; Ain't No Fun Waitin' Round To Be A Millionaire

You know we got to sit around at home and watch this thing begin
But I'll bet there won't be many live to see it really end
'Cos the fire in the street ain't like the fire in the heart
And in the eyes of all these people don'tcha know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now's the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
There ain't no Great Society
As it applies to you and me
Our country isn't free
And the Law refuse to see
If all that you can ever be
Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns the store
You know that five in ever four
Just won't amount to nothin' more
Than watchin' rats go across the floor
And make up songs about bein' poor

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colours on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds and violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colours changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artists' loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen
They're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

29. Gordon Lightfoot - Minstrel of the Dawn
Sun May 27, 2012, 01:25 AM
May 2012

The minstrel of the dawn is here
To make you laugh and bend your ear
Up the steps you’ll hear him climb
All full of thoughts, all full of rhymes
Listen to the pictures flow
Across the room into your mind they go
Listen to the strings
They jangle and dangle
While the old guitar rings
The minstrel of the dawn is here
Not too wise but oh so free
He’ll talk of life out on the street
He’ll play it sad and say it sweet
Look into his shining face
Of lonelines you’ll always find a trace
Just like me and you
He’s tryin’ to get into things
More happy than blue

A minstrel of the changin’ tide
He’ll ask for nothing but his pride
Just sit him down upon that chair
Go fetch some wine and set it there
Listen to the pictures flow
Across the room into your mind they go
Listen to the strings
They jangle and dangle
While the old guitar rings

A minstrel of the dawn is near
Just like a step ’n fetchit here
He’s like an old time troubador
Just wanting life and nothing more
Look into his shining eyes
And if you see a ghost don’t be surprised
Like me and you
He’s tryin’ to get into things
More happy than blue

The minstrel boy will understand
He holds a promise in his hand
He talks of better days ahead
And by his words your fortune’s read
Listen to the pictures flow
Across the room into your mind they go
Listen to the strings
They jangle and dangle
While the old guitar rings

The minstrel of the dawn is gone
I hope he’ll call before too long
And if you meet him you must be
The victim of his minstrelsy
He’ll sing for you a song
The minstrel of the dawn

30. Here's one in honor of Memorial Day
Sun May 27, 2012, 07:52 PM
May 2012
16 years old when I went to the war
To fight for a land fit for heroes
God on my side and a gun in my hand
Chasing my days down to zero

And I marched and I fought and I bled and I died
And I never did get any older
But I knew at the time that a year in the line
Was a long enough life for a soldier

We all volunteered and we wrote down our names
And we added two years to our ages
Eager for life and ahead of the game
Ready for history's pages

And we brawled and we fought and we whored till we stood
Ten thousand shoulder to shoulder
A thirst for the hun, we were food for the gun
And that's what you are when you're soldiers

I heard my friend cry and he sank to his knees
Coughing blood as he screamed for his mother
And I fell by his side and that's how we died
Clinging like kids to each other

And I lay in the mud and the guts and the blood
And I wept as his body grew colder
And I called for my mother and she never came
Though it wasn't my fault and I wasn't to blame

The day not half over and ten thousand slain
And now there's nobody remembers our names
And that's how it is for a soldier

32. Patriot's Dream, by Gordon Lightfoot
Mon May 28, 2012, 12:35 PM
May 2012

This song broke my heart in the early 70's and sadly, it is as relevant today as back then.

The songs of the wars are as old as the hills
They cling like the rust on the cold steel that kills
They tell of the boys who went down to the tracks
In a patriotic manner with the cold steel on their backs

The patriot's dream is as old as the sky
It lives in the lust of a cold callous lie
Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill
Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills

The train pulled away on that glorious night
The drummer got drunk and the bugler got tight

While the boys in the back sang a song of good cheer
While riding off to glory in the spring of their years

The patriot's dream still lives on today
It makes mothers weep and it makes lovers pray
Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill
Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills

Well there was a sad, sad lady
Weeping all night long
She received a sad, sad message
From a voice on the telephone
Her children were all sleeping
As she waited out the dawn
How could she tell those children
That their father was shot down
So she took them to her side that day
And she told them one by one
Your father was a good man ten thousand miles from home

He tried to do his duty and it took him straight to hell
He might be in some prison, I hope he's treated well

Well there was a young girl watching in the early afternoon
When she heard the name of someone who said he'd be home soon
And she wondered how they got him, but the papers did not tell
There would be no sweet reunion, there would be no wedding bells
So she took herself into her room and she turned the bed sheets down
And she cried into the silken folds of her new wedding gown

He tried to do his duty and it took him straight to hell
He might be in some prison, I hope he's treated well

Well there was an old man sitting in his mansion on the hill
And he thought of his good fortune and the time he'd yet to kill
Well he called to his wife one day, "Come sit with me awhile"
Then turning toward the sunset, he smiled a wicked smile
"Well I'd like to say I'm sorry for the sinful deeds I've done
But let me first remind you, I'm a patriotic son"

They tried to do their duty and it took 'em straight to hell
They might be in some prison, I hope they're treated well

The songs of the wars are as old as the hills
They cling like the rust on the cold steel that kills
They tell of the boys who went down to the tracks
In a patriotic manner with the cold steel on their backs

The train pulled away on that glorious night
The drummer got drunk and the bugler got tight
While the boys in the back sang a song of good cheer
While riding off to glory in the spring of their years

The patriot's dream still lives on today
It makes mothers weep and it makes lovers pray
Let's drink to the men who got caught by the chill
Of the patriotic fever and the cold steel that kills

Businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids in art school said they would
And I guess I'll just begin again
You say, Can we still be friends?

If I was scared
I would
And if I was bored
You know I would
And if I was yours
But I'm not

All the kids have always known
That the emperor wears new clothes
But to bow to down to them anyway
Is better than to be alone

If I was scared
I would
And if I was bored
You know I would
And if I was yours
But I'm not

Now you're knocking at my door
Saying please come out with us tonight
But I would rather be alone
Than pretend I feel alright

If the businessmen drink my blood
Like the kids in art school said they would
Then I guess I'll just begin again
You say can we still be friends

If I was scared
I would
And if I was pure
You know I would
And if I was yours
But I'm not

Now I'm ready to start

If I was scared
I would
And if I was pure
You know I would
And if I was yours
But I'm not

Now I'm ready to start
I would rather be wrong
Than live in the shadows of your song
My mind is open wide
And now I'm ready to start
Your mind surely opened the door
To step out into the dark
Now I'm ready

37. Miss Misery by Elliott Smith
Mon May 28, 2012, 03:07 PM
May 2012

I'll fake it through the day
With some help from johnny walker red
Send the poison rain down the drain
To put bad thoughts in my head

Your two tickets torn in half
And a lot of nothing to do
Do you miss me, miss misery
Like you say you do?

A man in the park
Read the lines in my hand
Told me I'm strong
Hardly ever wrong I said man you mean

You had plans for both of us
That involved a trip out of town
To a place I've seen in a magazine
That you left lying around

I don't have you with me but
I keep a good attitude
Do you miss me, miss misery
Like you say you do?

I know you'd rather see me gone
Than to see me the way that I am
But I am in the life anyway
Next door the TV's flashing

Blue frames on the wall
It's a comedy of errors, you see
It's about taking a fall
To vanish into oblivion

Is easy to do
And I try to be but you know me
I come back when you want me to
Do you miss me miss misery
Like you say you do?

Up From the Skies

I just want to talk to you
I won't uh, do you no harm
I just want to know about your diff'rent lives
On this is here people farm
I heard some of you got your families
Living in cages tall and cold
And some just stay there and dust away
Past the age of old.
Is this true ?
Please let me talk to you.

I just wanna know about
The rooms behind your minds
Uh do I see a vacuum there
Or am I going blind ?
Or is it just uh, remains of vibrations
And echoes long ago ?
Uh things like "Love the world" and uh
Uh "Let your fancy flow"
Is this true ?
Please let me talk to you
Let me talk to you.
[ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/jimi+hendrix/up+from+the+skies_20071568.html ]
I have lived here before
The days of ice
And of course this is why
I'm so concerned
And I come back to find
The stars misplaced
And the smell of a world
That is burned
A smell of a world
That is burned.

Yeah well, maybe, hmm...
Maybe it's just a... change of climate
Hmm, hmm...
Well I can dig it
I can dig it baby
I just want to see.

So where do I purchase my ticket ?
I'd just like to have a ringside seat
I want to know about the new Mother Earth
I want to hear and see everything
I want to hear and see everything
I want to hear and see everything
Yeah...

Aww, shucks
If my daddy could see me now
Everything, everything, everything, oh everything.

September '77
Port Elizabeth weather fine
It was business as usual
In police room 619
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

When I try to sleep at night
I can only dream in red
The outside world is black and white
With only one colour dead
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is deadM

You can blow out a candle
But you can't blow out a fire
Once the flames begin to catch
The wind will blow it higher
Oh Biko, Biko, because Biko
Yihla Moja, Yihla Moja
-The man is dead

And the eyes of the world are

MY MOTHER'S GARDEN
From: Live at Tin Angel (1993)
Copyright © Susan Werner

If it's warm and it's clear and a full moon tonight
Let's go down to my mother's garden
I'll tap on your door at a quarter to one
Come quickly as soon as you hear me
And we'll steal down the carpeted stairs
In pyjamas of Packers and Bears
And we'll hold in our breath till we're out the back door
With food for the dog so he's quiet

We'll skip 'cross the grass in our tender bare feet
With the blades clinging on to our ankles
And the crickets will sing us the Latin high mass
As we come to the altar of flowers
And the snapdragons narrow and tall
And the zinneas the brightest of all
And the peonies came from great-grandmother's farm
And someday I'll grow them at my house

Come over a row to the peas and the beans
All waiting like good little soldiers
Go on help yourself to a handful of each
The best ones are always the young ones
And the ground cherries grow down the line
Eat a dozen or so off the vine
Hey the muskmelon's ripe so we'll crack one in two
And we'll feast just like thieves up in heaven

Then we'll sneak back inside like the Indians would
Be sure not to step on the branches
And we'll slip into bed and we'll lie wide awake
'Til the moon sinks below California
And my mother she sleeps and she knows
One eye open, the other eye closed
In the morning she'll smile and she'll wave us goodbye
And she'll never betray our adventure

If it's warm and it's clear and a full moon tonight
Let's go down
To my mother's garden

42. One of my all-time favorites. "This Song Has No Title" by Elton John and Bernie Taupin
Tue May 29, 2012, 06:51 AM
May 2012

Tune me in to the wild side of life
I'm an innocent young child sharp as a knife
Take me to the garretts where the artists have died
Show me the courtrooms where the judges have lied

Let me drink deeply from the water and the wine
Light coloured candles in dark dreary mines
Look in the mirror and stare at myself
And wonder if that's really me on the shelf

chorus
And each day I learn just a little bit more
I don't know why but I do know what for
If we're all going somewhere let's get there soon
Oh this song's got no title just words and a tune

Take me down alleys where the murders are done
In a vast high powered rocket to the core of the sun
Want to read books in the studies of men
Born on the breeze and die on the wind

If I was an artist who paints with his eyes
I'd study my subject and silently cry
Cry for the darkness to come down on me
For confusion to carry on turning the wheel

[repeat chorus]

The fourth verse from "Give It Up" (from Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age, 1994) is powerful, especially given what happened just recently with Parkland shooting.

I never did represent doing dumb shit
Some gangsta lying, I'd rather diss Presidents
Dead or alive, bring 'em and I'll swing 'em
I vocalize, I just rap, I don't sing 'em
Flick 'em, and I fling 'em, you can go with 'em
Hall of Fame for the game for the points I Dave Bing 'em
Go Grandmama, close but no cigar
I got mine for I'm using my rhyme
The flow go wherever I want, and that's clever
Give a piece of my time to prevent some crime
And who behind puttin' the guns to the young ones
The ones that make 'em is the ones that take 'em
Rugged for no reason, down in duck season
I don't want my mama, on the street wearing armor
So check yaself before ya wreck yaself
Respect yaself, hah, you got ta give it up
