The latest pics of the new house.

Now that winter is over, it's time to start thinking about the huge swath of dirt which surrounds the place. I have discovered that raking compacted dirt is not fun, but I am sure I will have no regrets once we get the grass seed going.

Flower bed

Lower level flower bed

Flower beds as seen from the driveway

Husband and elder son making a trellis for the climbing rose

Ran out of lattice for the top, so it's not quite done yet. We're going to enclose the bottom of the porch in the same lattice work.

Younger son helped plant this Forsythia

...and also this dwarf Burning Bush

Prostrate Veronica, which will hopefully shore up the slope when it fills in.

Various colored cone flowers are planted here

Pot of chives. We live in deer country, so I was told to plant smelly things they don't like.

Pansies and Sweet Alyssum

Turned part of the basement into a teen hangout. I think this winter we'll add a foosball table too. (The kids are just loving the fact that they finally have a space for having friends over.)

Finally unpacked some breakables, but when we get the kittens this summer I will have to turn around and repack them. LOL

This is Charlotte. I think she is a flour sack doll, and could be fairly old.

You can see part of the pattern on her back. Whoever made her cut on the "sew" lines and sewed on some of the "cut" lines. I wonder if maybe she was a child's project?

In addition to the sweet little calico dress, she is wearing what I think is a muslin petticoat and a flannel one. Under those are bloomers, which you can see tucked away in the center of the pic. (She has no feet or hands.)

9. Thank you. :^) How are you surviving the weather? It's 50s and 60s here, but the trade off is rain.

25. Glad things cooled off for you! I am finding it a bit warm in the house for sleeping at night. Time

to get those flannel sheets switched out!

I don't know what I would do without hubby and his DIY skills. I can do some things myself, but he's got a lot more experience than I do.

The kids did a great job. Elder was actually pretty helpful building the arch, and did some of the work himself. Younger helped me with the digging and rock removing while planting the bushes. (And a good thing because there was so much of both to be done!)

11. Thanks! It's very exciting to see it taking shape. I just wish we had the money to

get everything done all at once rather than buying and planting a bush and flower every weekend or so. LOL

3. Just lovely!

Very handsome son you have there too. A nice blank canvas to plant, oh the possibilities and oh, the work involved. The two tiered garden is already beautiful with just the rocks, it is going to be fantastic when things start to bloom.

I like your little cow pitcher; is it old? My mother had one, but I must have cracked it, I played with it so much when I was a girl.

12. Thank you. I think my boys are growing up to be pretty nice looking. :^D The cow creamer was

in my parents' attic. Knowing my mother, it wasn't at all her taste, so maybe it was her mom's or another relative's? It might be from the 50s in that case, since my grandmother died in '58.

oh, wait a minute ... this isn't Mitt's, right?

I guess the clue would be the lady of the house actually with dirt on her clothes ...

Wow, these are great pictures! I think your garden will be really wonderful once things start blooming and spreading out.

Your sons look great...so grown up!

Thanks for updating us!

19. Thanks, Peggy. It's going to take ages filling up that garden since we

are buying a plant or two a week. LOL

The boys are getting huge. Elder son is off to high school this fall.

pride in it, as worn out as it had become.

23. If you know of any good "drapey" plants that are deer resistant, let me know? I'd like

to put something in that will lie softly on the faces of some of the boulders, tying the two levels together.

24. Don't know the names of plants. My parents did all the gardening. We had heaps of snap

dragons in the lower rock garden come August. They were stunning against the stone wall.

31. Silver Pony Foot looks great hanging off ledges and pots. It's a native plant here in Texas, and...

I think it might be deerproof. But it might not be hardy where you are. Here, it will die back some, then come back in the spring. It's silver-grey in color.

Is that "wilkum" plate/tile Dutch? I have similar ones at my house - in Swedish, of course, but the style is familiar.

Charlotte is beautiful!

so is your boy.

Never be ashamed of where or what you come from. It got you to where you are now. Good or bad, it's part of you.

Enjoy your new home. Nice job, lots of love there.

I'm not sure where that's at, but I think you may have crossed it.
