Taxes Pay for The NFL, But City Can't Afford Police

Last edited Mon Feb 4, 2013, 12:37 AM - Edit history (1)

Oakland, California, the fifth-most crime ridden city in America, faced a $32 million budget deficit in fiscal 2011. It closed the gap by shrinking its police force by 18 percent, shedding 138 officers including 80 dismissals.

Untouched was the $14 million that the city pays to stage 10 games a season for the National Football League's Oakland Raiders and to host Major League Baseball's Athletics in the O.co Coliseum. The funds include operations and costs related to a swap contract, and are supplemented by $10 million from surrounding Alameda County, based on data compiled by Bloomberg from public records."*

Taxpayers subsidize NFL stadiums and land, despite teams being privately owned by billionaires. The city of Oakland dumped millions into the Raiders, but couldn't pay for city police officers. What is happening to Oakland because of this? Cenk Uygur breaks it down. (From the 1/30 edition of The Young Turks)

Yeah I posted an anti-football video right after the Super Bowl!

1. Its not just the NFL

American companies looking to build anything big play communities off against each other, and get free land and tax breaks. It should stop at all levels.....and if it did sports teams wouldnt constantly be threatening to move.

3. I must be more of a newb at following the NFL system than I thought.

I didn't know that there are teams such as the Raiders that have their stadiums paid for via taxes. As much as I like them, it's really effed up because that money could be used towards something more constructive to our city, as this video implies. The owner is filthy-rich, so he should be able to pay for a new stadium on his own. It's funny because high-rollers like him are the main ones who derail against overreaching government when it comes to their pocketbooks, but they want their stadiums to be paid for with everyone's tax dollars, even people who don't watch sports.

6. I love football just as much as the next guy.

But what he is talking about is insane.

Cutting police by 18%.

And in addition the Raiders suck. There a terrible team.

8. I can't say it any better than Cenk

Except that - unlike Cenk - I think it's a stupid game. Actually, what physical sports games aren't??? We're a nation brought up on fighting and enemy-izing the other guy (gal). Cage fighting, boxing, hockey (brawling on ice with sticks) - you name it - aside from betting - who makes money on these spectacle confrontations???

Somebody - PLEASE - PM me when they start sending out fan appreciation checks. If the payouts are worth my time, I might start watching.
