Mayor's Group Sponsors Gun Control Super Bowl Ad

A gun control group founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is airing a Super Bowl advertisement calling for background checks.

The 30-second spot by Mayors Against Illegal Guns will air in the Washington area during the game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers.

The ad calls on lawmakers to pass rules requiring background checks on guns. It is narrated by children, with "America the Beautiful" playing in the background.

...

This is epic! One for sure way to get the word to the MASSES. My RW brothers head will explode!!

8. Why?

@AgingAmerican -
Why can't a liberal like me suport gun rights?
I have always been a proponent of rights, I just don't understand why the 2nd amendment is different than the others.
We give lawyers to murderers whom we KNOW did it, and give them their day in court, and sometimes they get aquitted. We are OK with this. Why are we NOT ok with an armed citizenry?

9. I own guns and I have no problem with basic gun control

I support gun rights. I don't support gun madness.

Obama isnt "taking away our guns", he is offering some very weak measures to curb gun violence. The Republican party is descending into madness. I do not support madness. The second amendment does not exist to enable madness. That is not it's purpose.

10. Not going to debate Obama

What is "Gun Madness"?
If you mean mass murder you're right. But mass murder has already ben banned.
What "Common Sense" gun control do you support?

11. Gun madness is what republicans spew

Their position on guns is based upon paranoia and fantasies of taking down an elected government.

"Mass murder has already been banned" What an idiotic statement. You sound hopeless.

I support taking weapons designed for infantry out of sale to civilians. I support gun registration/permits and background checks for all transfer of weapons.

A really good example of gun madness is their "Arm teachers" or "Arm all passengers on airplanes" nonsense. Yeah, all we need are wannabe Rambo's running around everywhere having wild shootouts at the drop of a hat. Pure madness.

12. Ummm OK

"I support taking weapons designed for infantry out of sale to civilians. I support gun registration/permits and background checks for all transfer of weapons."

I support background checks.
I support "registration" to the extent there is a sales authorization, as we have on handguns here in ct. (Even on private sales)
I do support permits and training requirements with strict rules on how they are issued, and what disqualifies an applicant.
I do not support renewals or fees, mostly because they are abused.

What weapons are "Designed for infantry" do you oppose? Full auto or selective fire? Those are already heavily restricted by the National Firearms act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968. NONE of the firearms used in Sandy Hook were designed for infantry. The rifle was a semi-automatic .223 carbine with a fixed stock. "Rifles designed for infantry" are usually 5.56 NATO chambered, and are selective fire ... meaning they can operate either full auto or semi.

Fine .. I will not argue in favor of civillians having full auto firearms.

"A really good example of gun madness is their "Arm teachers" or "Arm all passengers on airplanes" nonsense. Yeah, all we need are wannabe Rambo's running around everywhere having wild shootouts at the drop of a hat. Pure madness."

While I wouldn't advocate arming, or requiring arming "All" teachers, if a teacher is already a gun owner and carry permit holder, why do you advocate DISARMING those members of society. In fact, after 9/11, pilots were ALLOWED (not required) to carry in the cockpit.
Why is this madness, not common sense.

As for a bunch of "wannabe rambo's" most of us are trained to avoid confrontation.

Look - you don't like civillians being armed. You are entitled to your opinion.
I am just trying to understand what you think is are "Common Sense" gun control measures?

Throwing out ambiguous terms like "Gun Madness" which has a definition only in your own mind is not helpful.
I would like specifics.

Also - I have not insulted you. Please do me the same courtesy

As for me being a Republican I happen to support MOST (not all) of the Democratic Party Platform, and my belief system is certainly more Democratic than Republican. So if you are insinuating that I am a troll please don't
Once again, I have not insulted you.

13. You buy into republican madness

Arming teachers = madness.
Infantry weapons in the hands of civilians = madness
Everyone carrying concealed weapons = madness

Disarming = seizing weapons. Show me where I have advocated that. Not

"Look - you don't like civillians being armed" - Again, show me where I have advocated that. Not

"Throwing out terms like gun madness isnt 'helpful'" - The truth is always helpful, you just dont like the truth.

I have already laid out what gun control measures I would support. Not my fault if you pretend otherwise.

Oh, and when you make foolish statements like "Mass shootings are already banned" you show your hand. That is typical republican nonsense.

15. please elaborate

What exactly is an infantry weapon?
Please define.

Telling some who is legally allowed to carry that they cant = disarming.

You offer no facts, only opinion and emotion

When you do that you end up banning things based on the way they loik rather than they way they function, and with laws putting the law abidi g gun owner at a greater disadvantage then they already are

Oh... and you showed your thoughts on armed civillians when you say "everyone carrying a concealed weapon = madness".
Would you prefer I open carry?

31. Not kidding

What I posted is the main reason that so many of the Delicate Flowers hump their guns.

Secondary reasons include "I'll be able to shoot down all the drones & tanks they send at me when I try to overthrow the government", and "I'll be acclaimed as a Mighty Warrior when I stop a Bad Guy (trademark of Wayne LaTerrorist)"

16. nicely worded

I oppose the presidents gun control package.
It has nothing to do with wayne lapierre.

I oppose a hi-cap magazine ban. I can reload a magazine from slidelock in 1.7 seconds. So can a murderer. Criminals will still have them, or will make them. In a circumstance where youre being shot st 1.7 seconds is a lifetime. If youre the only one with a gun, its meaningless.
I oppose bans on folding stocks, pistol grips, barrel shrouds and bayonett lugs. They do nothing to change the lethality of a semi-auto rifle

I oppose registration. You are financially punnishing a minority. Scotus already decided years ago that requiring a felon to register a firearm violates his 5th amendment right sgainst self incrimination.

19. I ask about that point because it's a specious argument.

People choose to purchase a firearm - and part of that choice is based on cost (purchase, ammunition, cleaning supplies, safe storage, etc...and registration, if required).

I have to register my dog. Are dog owners a financially-punished minority?

Are dog owners a minority?
Does it cost anything to register a dog?
Fwiw we dont have dog registration in ct afaik.
Besides, im not against all registration, just reg fees and renewals. The state knows i have a permit and a gun ( actually 20)
Why do they need more info than that?

20. look, as a democrat

I find myself constantly defending positions other democrats dont agree with.
The main 2 are guns and Obama.
Many peoole think he blew it on climate change and guns. He is the only President after reagan that actually expanded gun rights.

As for guns, i still dont understand why democrats are so anti gun

It would have the actual pictures of dead kids from these shootings, as many as I could find where the parents were willing to let them be used. The narration and song, I would keep.

For corporate "persons" and Republicans who worship them, an extra penny in profit easily justifies murdering all your children. Sure, children are cute and all, but . . . PROFIT!
