2. I've been in Beijing both on days when it was clear and not clear

It's the same type of disaster that LA and other valley cities faced back in the 70's. The difference is with Beijing the population is much more. They are working on addressing the problem, but they have a long way to go.

6. NYC shut down for days in the 70s

Smog was so bad you couldn't see 20 feet.
Ashes from incinerators fluttered like snow flakes.

5. It has, especially when you combine it with the way they smoke over there

I'm surprised so many of them are living to be over 40, quite honestly.

33. Philip Morris hired Margaret Thatcher to promote their tobacco
products in Asia soon after she was de-throned. They paid her excessively and she contributed to their earnings. In 2000, they were the top cigarette manufacturer. A couple of Boca burgers isn't gonna put out that flame.

In July, 2001:
"In July, Philip Morris is again in the headlines after a report that it commissioned and delivered to the Czech government said premature deaths from smoking benefited governments because smokers would not live to use healthcare or housing for the elderly."

Fabulous, innovative marketing, that! I don't think they consider it a losing game at all; it's just a game they have to move elsewhere.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

4. I've also been to Beijing

And with as many subways lines that they have you would think people would try and get out of their cars.

I was within walking distance of line 2. Probably one of the older subways. But I was thrilled that it got me to where I needed to go quickly.
