Thom Hartmann: Prepare for life on a hotter more hostile planet

With just a few more weeks left in 2012, we’ll soon be closing the book on the hottest and most extreme year of weather in American history. So far, the last 11 months have marked the hottest period in our history, and once December is over, 2012 will officially be the hottest single year ever recorded - averaging a full degree above the previous record. In the first eleven months of this year, 85% of our nation was hit by the top 10% of the warmest temperatures in history. And with the hotter weather, comes more extreme weather. According to the National Climactic Data Center - 46% of the nation experienced very extreme weather. That’s more than double the average of extreme weather for the United States. This is what the Carbon Industry's global climate change has brought us. And, more troubling, the global weirding is just getting started, as the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration warns more record-breaking heat and extreme weather events are ahead in the near future. Tragically, we must prepare for life on a hotter, more hostile planet, brought to us by the oil, coal, and gas barons and industrialists who bought off our politicians, funded hack scientists to muddy the debate, and throw over 2.4 million pounds of pollution into our skies every SECOND with no regard whatsoever for future generations. Time to take higher ground…

1. An instant moratorium on new corporations must be enacted...

...unless those new corporations pay to prevent any carbon footprint based on their activities. This will virtually guarantee only union shops are able to afford the necessary upgrade. IN addition, we must mandate that EVERY private vehicle be hybrid design or electric, with an immediate global tax on oil and gas that is at least triple what it is now.

We must regulate, regulate, regulate, and blast all instances of rethugs policies that relax such initiatives to hell. Period.

2. No, a moratorium on breeding must be enacted.

The problem is population. The solution is birth control. Women's rights.

By the way, when population is under control, so will all of the other symptoms like what you mentioned. It's the simple, non-engineering way to bring the patient (earth) back into a natural equilibrium. Fewer wars...

3. Won't happen

Capitalism doesn't work without constant growth, which is why birth control and family planning are constantly undermined.

Our system has to go AND we have to move to renewables and 0 pollution methods of living.

TALL order.

4. Right. We're already talking about who is going to pay for our "something". Social Security?

It's a great system until we come up against that vertical part of the exponential growth curve. And there is no getting around it. We can frack. We can engineer "green" shit. But...

5. Oh, that part is a lie

Wall St. has been salivating over SSI for years, and the 1% want their 0 taxes + massive subsidies.

The planet can hold a bigger load of us, but the cost to other species will keep going up, so we shouldn't do it. Every place birth control and acceptance of no children exists though, negative population growth.

We CAN fix it, but I predict we won't.
