Analysts React to China's Aircraft Carrier Landing Show

Published on Nov 28, 2012 by NTDTV

This Chinese-made J-15 fighter jet, dubbed the "Flying Shark", touches down on the Liaoning. The ship, China's first aircraft carrier, refurbished from one bought from Ukriane in 1998. This first successful landing on an aircraft carrier marks an important military milestone for the Communist regime.

But analysts say in terms of establishing military prowess, it's not very significant.

{Lan Shu, Political Commentator}
"It's actually very foolish. Because for the CCP to try and show that its aircraft carrier has naval combat abilities, it will force its neighbors to form alliances with the United States."

Chinese state-run CCTV reported on the fighter jet landing on Sunday, though it's unclear exactly when the military drill happened. It comes at a time when the Chinese regime is locked in a stand-off with several neighboring countries over disputed sea waters.

Despite the J-15's landing success, some say the carrier Liaoning is yet to be combat-ready.

{Liu Yingquan, Former History Professor}
"It has no significant combat application. Unless the aircraft carrier is better fitted out, it will be an easy target if it, say, travels to waters near the disputed Diaoyu Islands."

But perhaps more important than Liaoning's capabilities, commentator Lan Shu says the Chinese regime may be using the military exercise for domestic reasons.

{Lan Shu, Political Commentator}
"Beijing's leaders are facing the crisis of very pointed domestic conflicts. So, it has to manipulate nationalism. It wants to create as much publicity as it can for the aircraft carrier milestone, in order to redirect the public's attention from existing social tensions."

The Chinese public did indeed take note of state-run media's report. In particular, the "shooter" pose of two launch officers. Netizens have posted their own imitation online, poking fun at the image—which was first seen in US film "Top Gun."

1. So say the Falun Gong "New Tang Dynasty" TV...

I'm not saying that the alleged analysts cited by the group's news outlet are not valid, but best taken with a grain of salt.

5. From my persepctive.....

...they have much more validity than anyone else from China. In fact I'd put NTD today, in the same category as the North Star when it was formed.

2. The commentators point is correct.

Beijing will use its state run media to distract the public from real problems facing its citizens: issues like rising housing costs, rising food prices, and an economy that is having various problems. Not sure if government has tightened the money flow which it was not doing when I was there. Building like crazy. But don't let me get into stories of starting a building project--only to tear is down after a few months. The locals told me that more than once.

3. Sounds familiar

Wall Street will use its corporate run media to distract the public from real problems facing its citizens: issues like rising housing costs, rising food prices, and an economy that is having various problems.

9. Yep.

- Released in 71', THX1138 was a latter-day iteration of the dystopian future trope made famous by the likes of Orwell, Huxley and Zamyatin. In this instance it is George Lucas' interpretation. His first....
