Public Schools Denounced at Tea Party Rally in Tampa, Blamed for Election of Barack Obama

Conservative talk show host Neal Boortz, speaking at yesterday’s Unity Rally 2012 in Tampa ahead of the Republican National Convention, denounced public schools as “government schools” that are “forced upon us.” Boortz blamed “100 years of government education” for bringing America “to the point that a man like Barack Obama could be sworn in as president of the United States.”

Boortz directed the crowd to change the way they speak about public schools – calling them “government schools” instead. He also called on the audience to “preach school choice,” by which meant efforts to defund public schools and provide taxpayer dollars for religious and private schools and homeschooling.

1. Pfft.

Free public schools that foster free thought for its students are exactly why the United States is becoming more liberal and why people like President Obama are elected, because students are taught how to think, not what to think, which is what conservatives and the right-wing want.

But this country is still becoming more liberal in spite of it.

6. I find it disgustingly ironic

that this man, who preaches school choice and directing public monies to religious schools, clearly missed the main ideas of the New Testament. It's been a while since I read the Bible, but didn't Jesus teach his followers to respect others by affording them the right to free will and free choice to do what is right rather than to force their views on others?

Last time I checked, Obama seemed to stand up for individual rights considerably more than Romney. I am relieved to know that the American public put their vote behind someone like Obama. If that is due to our public education system, I'd thank a teacher for that.

9. Another good reason to support public schools.

The irony of Boortz's statement escapes him.

He has no idea that he presented one of the best reasons to keep public education.

14. truly a pathetic man

I once went into his"law office" in Atlanta when I was selling for Dictaphone. What a mess. He was a two bit lawyer who couldn't make it in private practice and a came back to talk radio to make a living. This genius went to John Marshall law school. The Walmart of law schools. leave us already.
