5. Bless Obama's "foot soldiers"

Just before the 2012 election, I was lying on my sofa, reading the last (and best ) chapter of a Michael Connelly
book. When the doorbell chimed, I thought, "Damn it. That has to be another Romney/Ryan disciple, wanting to
plant a campaign sign on the front lawn." Since my community is infested with Republicans, I yanked open the
front door and scowled. A young couple, dressed in "I am a struggling college student" outfits, politely asked if I
would consider voting for Barack Obama. You had to love these kids, with their earnest faces and 500-watt smiles.
I could tell they were both exhausted - a slight droop in the shoulders, faint shadows under the eyes, but nothing
and nobody was going to dampen their enthusiasm. Using an expression I assumed would make me sound "hip",
I exclaimed, "Obama is the Mannnn!" They looked a little startled at first, then obviously forgave my feeble
attempt to bridge the generation gap.
After I explained that my family and my husband's family and all our respective ancestors were union people,
who wouldn't support ANY GOP candidate under ANY circumstances, I effusively thanked them for the noble,
important work they were doing on the President's behalf.
Looking back on that encounter now, I'm ashamed I didn't invite them in for coffee and a sandwich, didn't
even bag up some cookies to sustain them for a few hours.
If by chance, either or both of these wonderful volunteers happens to read my story on DU, and recalls that
lone "blue" woman in a "red" neighborhood, I wish them with all my heart, a Happy Thanksgiving.
