Papantonio: Texas Schools Ban Critical Thinking

If you saw an article on the Internet telling you that schools in Texas were trying to ban the teaching of critical thinking, you’d probably think it was an article written by The Onion. But the sad and scary truth is that Republicans in Texas are actually writing laws that would ban school teachers from teaching their students how to look at facts, analyze data, and form conclusions based on observations. Essentially – they are trying to prevent children from developing critical thinking skills. Mike Papantonio talks about the dark ages mentality of Texas Republicans with Danny Weil, an investigative journalist with Truthout.

2. It must be already working

There are too many anti-intellectuals in the Tea Party, and Republican party.. who have really stupid ideas, fed to them by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage. This past election showed us just how many there are out there...Republicans want every one to be distracted by the shiny things, while they go virtually invisible on the radar screen, setting up unrealistic items for controlling the public for the future.

4. You have to have pretty thick skin....

to be a liberal Dem in Texas. The large cities can be an oasis (our Houston mayor is openly gay) but ignorance and anti intellectualism run deep. Now add all the BS testing and you destroy the joy of learning for students and the teacher moral is in the crapper.

The GOP had trashed the moderate GOP and we are still recovering from the redistricting we went through during the Bush years. The good news is that the GOP in the House lost their super majority. The last session, the Dems didn't even bother to show up-what was the point. This year we stand a chance. We got rid of some obnoxious folk.

Oh, and BTW, let me apologize in advance for Ted Cruz. He is a tea party obnoxious prick that will be in the Senate. You know it is bad when I am hoping John Cornyn can muzzle the jerk.

5. When I first saw this

I linked to it on another forum, and the amount of disbelief was insane.

I think it is time to shout this out everywhere. Fortunately. we had pulled our children from school because of the amount of religion and right wing thinking (much like this) that was done. Though the state didn't require it, we spent a lot of time on critical thinking both as a course and within the other subjects. It caused some problems when they would come to a differing conclusion from the school rep, but they both have used it since and have become well educated, and productive members of society.

Though it is interesting to watch them take apart a right wing argument an uncle provides as 'truth'.
