Given how badly Romney stepped in it, they really have no choice but to play it this way...but

Money on the scale Koch, Wynn, Adelson and company are spending can fund a lot of 'activities' around the world... when no one is watching - especially when they feel cornered and are about to lose their big investment?

it's a serious mistake to pick a fight with the media, and blame the fecklessness of their candidate on Candy Crowley. Frankly, the truth is that after 20 years of reporters being intimidated by the "liberal media" trope, they've had enough, and they won't take it anymore.
If they want to blame the media, or better yet, blame Candy Crowley, bring it on.
If they were smart, they'd just let it go. The elite spin doctors might be able to do that, but the lower level political operatives never will, and they'll probably create lots of fertile sound bytes for hidden taperecorders about what a "FAT B#%TCH" Candy Crowley is...thus alienating both reporters AND women voters. Better get out the popcorn, this is going to be a good one.
