Dolphins have only a short amount of time to get their young up to the surface after birth to take their first breath, after all.
That said it is an amazing bit of video.

(13,141 posts)in which case maybe they already have a midwife-patient
relationship, not just hovering?

(102,227 posts)It appears to be one of those "swim with the dolphins" facilities.

(71,611 posts)I can't imagine an average human mother giving birth around another species (e.g. gorillas, dolphins) without freaking out.
As a scuba diver, I was "befriended" by a wild dolphin (Jojo, in Grace Bay, Provo, T&C) and have no doubt who's the "higher" life form. Jojo and I went on 1-on-1 'play' swims together and played 'dolphin games.' It was an honor 'meeting' him. An experience that cannot be adequately described. Not just 'spiritual' but transcendent.
That dolphin's 'friends' just "KNOW" it's OK ... it's something I can't explain but there's a kind of understanding (and acceptance) one can have with a dolphin that's reliable but inexplicable.

(541 posts)I love how the calf is swimming like a pro just one second after it's born. It might be 'just instinct', but it's still awesome to me.

But, just out of curiosity, do dolphins normally birth breach?

(4,949 posts)Mother about-to-be Keo stationed dockside for an ultrasound exam just minutes before her babys birth on Monday. (Thats soon-to-be-born babys tail flukes outside of Keos abdomen!)Keo pre-birth ultrasound:
(as you know dolphins & whales use sonar or ultrasound to "see" or create images in their heads normally.)
