Thom Hartmann: Scientists Say the World Must Become Vegetarian

Here’s a warning to all meat-eaters out there - you may be forced to completely change your diet in the near future. Citing population trends that show there will be 2 billion more people on the planet by 2050, and dwindling water resources, a team of scientists with the Stockholm International Water Institute warned that in the next forty years - the world’s population will be forced to radically change their diet - going almost completely vegetarian.

2. The only problem is cultural. Many countries are almost completely vegetarian now.

A well-balanced vegetarian diet is able to keep people healthy. It's worked for millions of people for many centuries.

EDIT: It depends on climate and for some, their religious belief. Many are lacto vegetarians, many vegetarians eat fish. I did not use the word vegan for a reason, which the following complaints may believe are the same thing. They can argue impossibilities with those who promote that as the only way, which I have not done here. EOM.

animal protein as part of the diet. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, blood, etc. Human beings are not herbivores.

Not unless you import the food in the winter. And that means transportation that runs on fuels most of which produce carbon dioxide. The vegetariansim-for-all concept is not well thought through. It is the brainchild who never lived on a farm in the Midwest in the winter and walked to school in tall snowdrifts.

4. I use steer manure to fertilize my garden. My garden does not produce enough plant matter

to keep the earth productive. This won't work. It simply won't work.

Further, you can't grow vegetables and fruit in the winter in very cold climates. Think of Sweden and Finland. Think of the Midwest in the winter. Farmers set a supply of potatoes and carrots and beets in a cave under the ground to eat in the winter. But we don't do well on a diet solely of starches like wheat and barley that are dried. At the least, we will continue to eat chicken, eggs, and probably milk if not as much beef as we do. Further, hogs will eat stuff nobody else will eat.

Vegetarianism works well in warm climates. Even with global warming, northern regions won't probably support year-round crops.
