Bill Press: Sen. Sanders talks Social Security's surprising surplus (Breakfast with Bernie?)

Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont joins Bill to weigh in on his worries about Social Security and possible dangers to the program with Rep. Ryan as Romney's running mate. Sen. Sanders says, "With Paul Ryan on the ticket, we have to be very worried about Social Security." Sen. Sanders points out that Social Security has a 2.7 trillion dollar surplus that the mainstream media is ignoring and it will be good for another 75 years with some "minor changes."

(Interesting how Bernie is on the radio on a Friday when Thom Hartmann, who usually hosts the "Brunch with Bernie" hour on Fridays where Sanders answers callers' questions. But Thom hasn't been behind the mic all month.)

Thom's most recent "Brunch with Bernie", from 7/27:

1. We've lost Thom Hartmann on the radio

in Los Angeles, and he is sorely missed. Anybody in the KTLK audience know why??

I'll have to try to watch his show, especially on Friday online.

2. He's been out from what was to be routine surgery that tore something. Hopefully not gone for good.

He was gone earlier because of his wife's cancer tests and treatment. He returned, but this was unexpected.

4. Because KTLK would rather keep Randi Rhodes on live 12-3pm.

KTLK had no more room for Thom after Thom moved his show to Randi's time slot. So KTLK ended up adding another local program for the 9am-12pm slot (instead of adding Ed Schultz) in addition to David Cruz 3pm-6pm. Maybe it'd be a better idea to move David Cruz to 9am and play Thom on tape delay at 3pm. Or if the local Pacifica station can play the non-commercial version of the show.

5. Don'y know whythehell Press is surprised

The surplus resulted from the increase in FICA tax in 1983 in order to prepay boomer retirement.

6. It is easy to listen to Thom

on a smart phone of your choice use the tune in app. iheart radio has some of his stations as well.
Same on a computer those 2 programs or the actual station web site. WCPT is a terrific web feed.
My problem is not hearing either Randi or Thom because they are at the same time slot. So I find the stations that delay one or the other.
Tune In is a terrific App.
