Back when Lebanon was still a French mandate that included what is now Syria, and Palestine was an English mandate that included a good chunk of Jordan and Iraq.

A lot of professionals who immigrated from Damascus or other Syrian cities in the 1930's and 40's identified themselves as Lebanese, especially if they were Christians or Jewish. Issa's father would have been turned back this weekend.
