1. There Has Been a Persistent Effort Over the Last Few Decades to Dumb Down the American Public.

That way, the politicians figured they would be able to manipulate the American voter more easily. Unfortunately, what this dumbing down can also do is to open the door for dangerous, maniacal demagogues like Trump. You can't have it both ways, to have a congenial atmosphere for the former but avoid the latter. Therefore, in any society that purports to be a democracy, the wisest course of action overall is to have a well educated, informed public that is able to think critically for themselves. That way, the American voter can tell whether or not a potential candidate for president is on the up and up, or is just feeding them a bunch of dangerous or misleading BS.
