7. That's my problem with a lot of these flash mobs

They're tainted by advertising and about as "real" as "reality shows."

Our "reality" is so scripted and packaged these days that few of us recognize the real thing anymore.

Anyone with a fundamental understanding of camera setups should be able to detect when one of these things is staged. Then again, many of us cheered when throngs of ebullient Iraqis "spontaneously" tore down Saddam's statue.

11. Beethoven's Ode to Joy

has a special place for me. First and only classical piece I learned to play on the piano in my brief piano career as a kid. It's a gorgeous bit of music.

19. Superb

Excellent video, especially the children. Powerful, very political because it managed to join a group of strangers, a crowd of people who just moments before were about their varied way, into a unified family. If only the Dems could figure out how to move the spirit of the people so profoundly and really.

IMV - she is someone special to have interest in a classical performer, his instrument and classical music at such a young age.

What lucky children, to grow up in a place where such a thing is possible...!

33. Amazingly, so do the people of the United States

"Random Acts of Culture" drive me up the wall with pleasure.

Back in the 30's part of the New Deal, in its original form, was strong financial support for the arts and humanities. Orchestras and theaters could afford to give free performances for their communities, and people who might have never stepped out of their fields or offices otherwise got the opportunity to enjoy the arts.

The difference between us and the rest of the world, is that the rest of the world actually has this thing called "leisure." Americans are usually so busy trying to keep their heads above the water that, for the most part, we simpoly don't have time for this sort of stuff. We definitely would if we could, though.
