Thom Hartmann: Geeky Science! Scared Grasshoppers Transform the Entire Ecosystem!

What do you do when you're scared of spiders? You might scream or run away - but your actions probably don't affect the ecosystem. What does new research reveal about frightened grasshoppers and the role they play on changing our entire ecosystem?

If the grasshoppers are all fat, dumb and happy and there are no predators to eat them, then they will eat up all those plants and make many, many more baby grasshoppers. If you have too many grasshoppers they release a chemical to cause them to grow wings and swarm into huge clouds of locust. Then they eat everything in sight as they move. Swarms of locust really affect the ecosystem in a negative way.

I think scared grasshoppers are a good thing.
