a real competitor -- Had Secretariat not been so extraordinary, Sham might have won that race. As it was, he tired himself out trying to keep pace with a mater machine.

Unbelievable. The gang went to our local bar hangout for a couple pitchers on a Saturday afternoon. I was 21. They all were yakking and having a great time, not really paying attention. I was. Then at the first turn I told them they better look up at the 19 inch TV in the bar. Now. They did . . .

4. I remember that race vividly. I loved Secretariat. When he first came on the track they booed him.

Booed him. Then most were saying that he' never make the distance. Man, he showed them a thing or two.

He came here to Saratoga and I desperately wanted to see him, but my Dad said no, since the crowds were unbelievable and it was pretty crazy there. I'll always regret that I missed my chance.
