(8,879 posts)President Sanders will use the bully pulpit in concert with the American people to persuade congress to do the right thing.
This guy knows what it takes. He didn't just fall off the turnip truck. With every passing week he gains power and influence. He is going to make a great president. Congress better get ready to feel the Bern.

now could you talk her into having more debates? Not just talking about it.

(8,879 posts)harness the power of a population eager to come together and do something, when we have a president whose response to national tragedy is to tell Americans to go shopping . . . Not terribly persuasive.

(6 posts)The only reason you're hearing about it now is because he's a presidential candidate who is doing well with his events. The POTUS gets covered, for sure.

So there's the answer to the question we all asked on the first day he announced. How will he do it. The answer is WE will do it. And he'll use his position to bring us together.

(12,882 posts)We can live by OUR choice or by CORPORATE choice. Bernie Sanders is the ONLY candidate that affords US these choices. All the other VIABLE candidates afford us the latter (Corporate) fate.

And we have let go of the reins of power for far too long.

(13,069 posts)And, Obama is the best persuader I have ever seen in the White house. If he could not persuade, it is unlikely that Bernie will change his ways significant enough to suddenly persuade.

(687 posts)Obama never tried to do what Sanders sets out as his method of operation.

(1,701 posts)He wasted far too much time trying to persuade Republican Congressmen and women to be reasonable. Obama is a very eloquent man, but he didn't use the bully pulpit as he should have. To be fair, though, when he came into office he was surrounded by disasters on all sides and had very little help from Congress. I wish he had given up on the Republicans sooner and had gone to the people and asked us to pressure our representatives to support him. I think Sanders has learned from this mistake.

(316 posts)She's certainly been following his lead on a number of issues.
But the point isn't persuasion. He doesn't believe persuasion is possible. You're not going to make significant progress politely asking greedy rich people to be less greedy. You have to mobilize working/middle class people to force them.

(20,453 posts)Precisely what we have to do.
"We" includes trade unions and professional groups who are licensed in health care, child care, teaching, social workers, food workers, in other words
the very people who know those issues and to whom the legislature shall hear from.

Riiight.....
"And, Obama is the best persuader I have ever seen in the White house."
Too young for Johnson?
Yeah...Obama's the greatest persuader.... when not giving up things to the GOP....

(687 posts)to do when he got elected.
It was baffling that he did not, at first. Then we saw President Obama spend his entire presidency trying to convince the Republicans to agree to their own platform of Entitlement Reductions, while refusing to even put forward the progressive agenda that Sanders mentions here.
We got a lot of problems in this country but I think Bernie puts his finger on the biggest one. We are now a nation of consumers who think that a politician is a product to buy, rather than somebody to challenge us to do our jobs as citizens of a democracy. The Billionaires are delighted to sell us Hope and Change, while lulling us back to sleep -- keeping us separate from what the Government does.
Bernie offers us the chance to get our society back. It is up to us to do it.
