Mike Malloy - The More Bills You Block, The More We Will Fund You

File this under unsurprising, but nefarious nonetheless.

Members of U.S. Congress who vote against mandatory labeling for genetically modified (GMO) products receive three times as much funding from the food and agriculture lobbies as their colleagues, according to new reporting from Open Secrets, a project of the Center for Responsive Politics.

The political finance watchdog group found that the supporters of the anti-labeling bill which passed the House of Representatives last Thursday collectively received $29.9 million from the agribusiness lobby and food and beverage industry during the 2014 election cycle.

Like that progressive documentary stated: If you want to get carbon and poisons out of the air, if you want to get poisons out of the water, if you want to get poisons out of your food (GMOs, pesticides, etc...) you gotta get money out of politics! Consumer advocates can infarct themselves a million times over with righteous indignation, but until this is done, we will get the same toxic and poisonous results.

Heck, the corruption of corporate cash can make even the most morally, ethically and environmentally absurd deals and practices, like diverting badly needed water in drought stricken states like Texas to fracking, or the hideous Keystone XL pipeline - all the drinking and agricultural water of the midwest will be poisoned, but that's OK - to be the de facto law of the land and business as usual.
