Oklahoma Court Says Frackers Can Be Sued For Earthquakes

The Oklahoma State Supreme Court delivered a devastating blow to the fossil fuel industry when it unanimously decided that homeowners in Oklahoma could sue the industry for earthquake damage linked to hydraulic fracturing.

While the justices on the Court did not necessarily endorse the link between fracking and earthquakes, they did acknowledge the fact that increased fracking activities have correlated with an increase in earthquakes, and that existing tort laws would allow plaintiffs to sue the industry if damage can be proven.

Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.

This is good news.

Of course, you will have to be lawyerd up mightily because the oil companies will fight this with every dime they own.

I think it was paid for by the American Petroleum Institute. Surely they wouldn't try to mislead us.

...but I won't be holding my breath waiting for it. My hope has been from the beginning of
fracking in this state that big ranchers and other wealthy land owners would organize and successfully bring
pressure to bear on the Texas Legislature to enact laws severely limiting if not banning the insane practice of
hydro-fracking.

So far the fracking interests are still too strong here. We'll see how things evolve as the damage from
fracking continues to expand and affect more and more people.
