A small number of citizens have been deported over the years. These were naturalized citizens, whose naturalization was revoked based on a finding of fraud in the process. (It seems that some Nazi concentration camp guards who came here after World War II were less than candid about their roles in the Holocaust.) Once the naturalization is revoked, the person is no longer a citizen and can be deported.

When TPM refers to "5 million Americans" it means people who are actually here but who aren't citizens.
