(14,733 posts)I'm split, so I'll leave it up to others to decide. Yes, it's from a right wing organization, but it actually makes some damn good visuals about just how LITTLE the US is doing to alleviate worldwide poverty, which, I am sure, is not actually the message the video creators are trying to get across.
If folks do watch the video, I'd say just ignore the 'oh, we shouldn't do anything about upping immigration' message, and simply look at the relative sizes about how many people in the world are living in extreme poverty. It's pretty shocking when you look at the scale, and realize that half the world is living on less than 2 bucks a day.

This post is disruptive, hurtful, rude, insensitive, over-the-top, or otherwise inappropriate.
YOUR COMMENTS
Right wing propaganda - the video is from NumbersUSA, a right wing group as you can see on their website: http://www.donotlink.com/framed?52753
And is considered "nativist" by the SPLC: http://www.splcenter.org/publications/the-nativist-lobby-three-faces-of-intolerance/numbersusa-the-grassroots-organizer
This organization is NOT on our side because they do not the immigration reform measures backed by Democrats. Source: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2013/08/the-little-group-behind-the-big-fight-to-stop-immigration-reform/278252/
The Atlantic article above notes that the founder of NumbersUSA has associated with a white supremacist/eugenicist type named John Tanton.
And as you can see Numbers USA is definitely not on the progressive side on certain issues.

Right wing propaganda does not belong on V&M. No "it's just an opinion, discuss don't hide" excuses. Juries need to enforce terms of service - and this video has a million views on youtube already so it's not like Roy Beck/NumbersUSA are being censored.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Wed Jul 9, 2014, 09:25 PM, and voted 3-4 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: Immigration is not about raising the standard of living in the rest of the world. I don't know what the guy's point is other than he likes colorful gumballs and he's got an audience of dullards nodding in agreement with him. That being said, other than its lack of intellectual content, its not particularly incendiary or disruptive. Is the poster a troll. Was this posted to disrupt? Is there anything antagonistic about posting this? On its face no. However, the video is posted without comment or context. It seems to be an attempt to disseminate this nonsensical argument on behalf of Mr. Beck. I generally don't like hiding posts-and to the alerter, I believe in discussion over censorship- but the manner that this post was made makes me believe it was not intended to generate intelligent and rational debate. Its basically spam. To the poster-if this was intended to generate a substantive discussion, this was not the way to do it and if you think Mr. Beck is making some kind of intelligent argument, you need to re-assess your critical thinking skills. If your intention was simply to further disseminate this tripe on Mr. Beck's behalf, there are other sites to peddle his half-witted ideas. This is not one of them. My first impression was to leave it but I think it needs to go.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE
Explanation: Tough call. RW site aside, and I don't know how factual the numbers are, I think most DUers can agree that its simply not possible for the US to admit every single person in the world who wants to immigrate here. The problems need to be addressed at the source, by the world community. And the US needs to address its trade policies and corporate actions that contribute to the problem. So, despite a suspect messenger, I don't feel the message itself is so grossly wrong that its worth hiding.
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT
Explanation: We don't need propaganda here.

(193 posts)I did not know this. Somebody sent me the link and I thought it was pretty well done.
I think there is a real problem with immigration and for us to sit back and act like America can take on all people is crazy. We should be looking at ways to improve their lives where they are now. Im not sure how you go about that but there has to be better answers.

(4,075 posts)Listen to what the guy is saying: so many billions of people "come from countries where the average income is x". He's not saying that all of these people make x, he's saying that they live in countries where the average income is x. Clearly an attempt to mislead.
Also, he offers absolutely NO suggestions on how to improve these people's lives in their own countries. He only says that that's where we should focus our efforts. Okay, fine. But I'll bet you a million dollars that when it comes time to spend the money to improve the lives of those people in other countries, he'll make some other misleading video to argue that we shouldn't spend our money that way either.
And finally, if he's arguing that because of all of his gum balls we shouldn't help the many thousands of unaccompanied children amassing on our southern border, then to hell with him. There aren't enough gum balls in the world to make me agree with that heartless conclusion.
