1. Serving and protecting.

But I don't want to pass judgement on the poor driver. We don't know the details. This story is really light on important details, but it seems obvious the cop who was so surprised by the man who jumped in front of the car is the victim here.

2. it seems obvious the cop is the victim - WTF ???

The time stamp on the video shows the cop stopping twice to look at the victim lying in the street and them accelerating as the cop runs over the victim

Just sum more of that "Pesky Time Stamped Video Evidence"

I know - its the video camera's fault

3. Settle down DJ. Im on your team.

I thought it was so obvious the snarkasm tag would be overkill, like if the cop threw it in reverse for a second pass .

4. Sorry

Where did those little graphics go anyway

I'm a Union man and a staunch supporters of labor unions in general. But if police officers unions are going to continue to fight to justify actions such as these I'm prepared to jump on the "Break the Police Unions" bandwagon

12. I represent and support unions and cops, but right now both have a lot of work to do to clean up

their behavior. As far as cops go, we are approaching this wrong if we ever want them to get better. The Republicans totally support them so cops that are Democrats have to be so secretly. Here in the Facists state of Texas, Governor Perry and current AG/Gov candidate Greg Abbott alternate speaking with the largest police organization in Texas at their convention every year. What we are doing by only being critical will not have the desired effect of positive change. Find someone you know who is a cop and ask to go on some "ride alongs." We Democrats are usually much more empathetic than Repugs, and part of being empathetic is putting yourself in their shoes. I make fun of Mitt Romney when he made his 1st ever trip to a fast food joint because you could see how out of touch he was with everyday folks. It is almost the same way with cops. If you were to see what their job is like you would have a much better understanding of them. This is not an excuse for them, they have an us vs. them attitude and a much higher percentage of power/thrill seekers pick law enforcement as a career. I am just a firm believer that understanding them is the first step to getting them to change. People tend to forget that, at the bottom of it, they are human too. Being lied to all day everyday, threatened, cussed, it all adds up. The biggest problem is in getting rid of the ones that are in it for the power trip. They behave like combat soldiers so that even the ones who mean well feel compelled to cover up for the bad apples. That has to stop!

16. I all comes from the Supreme Court's decision

Taking away our 14th Amendment Rights the moment any cop for any reason decides to stop a citizen was bad enough. But granting "The State" (the cop) complete and utter immunity by disallowing any rebuttal of intent or actions is lunacy.

The Police Unions jumped onto the Band Wagon by producing numerous "Exon/Mobile Green House Gas like studies" of why the cop needs to shoot unarmed citizens.

"Cops are People"

They are not infallible nor immune from bias, or even bigoted behavior. This whole "The State can do no wrong" theory of law has created "Over 20% of all Police Shootings are Unarmed Citizens" and the Police Officers Unions are right along side it producing the phony studies, and instructing Police Chiefs to wage disinformation campaigns to discredit the victim.

Hopefully the Supreme Court's decision will be overturned soon. Gawd knows the 20% of Dead Citizens certainly need the relief. But until then I'll blame the police officers union for passing the disinformation

Nice job dickwad

Cool said the officer took some time off because he was distraught after the terrifying ordeal. Officials said they were investigating the incident, but it appeared to be an accident.

7. Terrifying ordeal?

Yeah I guess so, especially for the victim! You know how this is going to turn out. Thank goodness the soldier is alive, I was sure he would be dead after seeing the video.

I understand that the guy was wearing dark clothes, but was the cop not looking at the road as he was driving? Especially going as slow as he was at first. (I hope he wasn't on the phone or texting!)

ps thanks for the link to more of the story

24. The "Dark Clothes" story is a Bold Face Lie by Tacoma Police

They claim it is "Infrared Video" and White and Dark are reversed in the video

THAT WOULD BE A LIE

Look at the WHITE shirt on the Victim next to the WHITE patrol car in the video

Look at this photo of a Tacoma Police Cruiser in normal daylight conditions

Some one is LIEING

I think our Armed Services Personnel and the General Public deserve better

27. You are absolutely right!

Wow, they will say anything to try to direct the blame away from themselves. I just watched it again, and you can see the taillights on the cop car when it stops after running the guy over. Then the cop walks back and is standing there looking at the ground and presumably the victim who is hidden by the time stamp. The cops clothing is dark and it looks like there are white letters across his back. So, more proof of what you say--someone is lying! Unless the Tacoma PD dress like ice cream men in white!

In my mind I was envisioning the cop yelling at the guy to do something like get up or stop resisting or...........fill in the blank.

I hope there will be some updates on the victim.

10. Bullshit!

The cop purposely ran over the man. Do you really think that anyone would continue driving if they felt a bump were one shouldn't be? His patrol car headlights were shining directly at the man when the cop stopped three times, inching forward each time and then when the cop proceeded to drive, he felt a bump and continued driving without stopping as evidenced from the video. And it wasn't a small bump, it was big enough to cause the car to lift from the front wheels and the car bounced from the front two or three times afterward. That's why I'm calling bullshit on the cop and the police department.

This was malicious, vile, premeditated, and evil from the pig.

17. This is probably going to get me branded a "cop apologist" but.....

(anyone who wants to call me a cop apologist please first do a search of my user name and cop/pigs/pig/fucking pigs before you leap)

There's a pretty good chance this cop was clacking away on his computer screen and not paying attention to driving like he should have been. The kind of thing they write tickets to us for.

That said, the man and his family deserve a very large settlement for medical bills, physical and mental trauma and pain and suffering. All due to, at the very least, gross negligence.

I'm not saying a cop wouldn't deliberately hit or run someone over with their cruiser. They do it all the time - they like to clip young African American kids. In fact there is a video in this forum showing just that. But it's usually done when someone has the nerve to disrespect their "authority" and run or talk back.

Who knows. Maybe this guy is a deranged lunatic wannabe serial killer and runs over random people in the street. I'm thinking it's more along the lines of gross negligence. There has been plenty of people killed by cops fucking around with their "SCMODS" while not paying attention to the road.

The cops creep down my street every night about 1 am looking for parking stickers. Because, I guess, there is nothing better for the cops to be doing in Chicago at 1am.

18. He was "looking for prowlers"

Infrared video, where darks are light and lights are dark...so, do the headlights on the police car point skyward and not light up anything, even a tiny bit, on the pavement?

Does the cop look at the ceiling of his vehicle when he turns his head to look for prowlers, never looking at the road in front of him to see what he might hit while his car is in motion? And when his car bumps up and over the man's body, then shimmies as its dragging the man, the cop didn't think he should check to see what all that movement meant?

That said, we need to see video of what happened before the soldier ended up in the street and the police car arrived--what is the timing between the two incidents? If the camera is the motion detection variety, which i suspect it may be, there was certainly some kind of motion to trigger the camera when he fell. Where is the rest of the video that should show what happened and how long after the fall the police car arrived on the scene?

I think there is room for doubt, the cop may be innocent. But not to have seen something in the road right in front of his car when he was going so slowly, then not to stop to see what he hit right away...

20. I'm not apologizing for cops

Learn to read everything that is written before you comment on something. I asked a lot of questions about his behavior, I didn't give him a pass. Now get over your self-importance-I hate most cops, there are 3 in my family and they're all bastards, along with most of their buddies.

You can see that the cop was actually looking at the man in the road? Even bats aren't that good in the dark.

There is reasonable doubt...but only a minute amount, in my opinion.

Edited for additional comments.

21. Obviously we need beleive every "After the Fact" story the police peddle to the sheeple

never heard any thing more ludicrous in my life

Going to be interesting how this plays out. Because he was not attempting to detain or arrest the victim the Officer involved will not have the protection set forth by the Supreme Court prohibiting prosecutors or defendants from questioning his intentions, motives, or past involvement.

The fact that he and every other officer has had those protection has only emboldened this one officer to believe he could get away with any thing

23. No, you don't believe the cops!

There needs to be more evidence. I'd like to see the timing between the soldier falling and how soon that police car arrived. It's very suspicious that he was driving so slowly and yet he didn't see something/anything in the road. And why the hell didn't he get out to see what he'd run over?

But without seeing the timing and knowing if the cop was just looking at and between houses, not at the road, there is room for a tiny tiny bit of doubt. My guess is that the cop is guilty as hell, but I want more proof.

22. That's Texas for ya. "String him up, it'll teach 'im a lesson."....

In this case: guy laying in the street: "Run him over, it'll teach 'im a lesson."

Or,...maybe they thought is was a TRICK.

Yeah,...that's it.

He was OBVIOUSLY hiding a GUN underneath and was trying to trick the cops into feeling sympathy so they would get out of their car and he could spin over and blow them away.

Well, we'll have none of that touchy feely "sympathy" crap here in TEXAS. Run his ass down just to be on the safe side.

Betcha the report they wrote up claims they FOUND him in a "run over" condition.

26. Another

HOUSTON -

A family is demanding answers from the Houston Police after they claim their son was the victim of excessive force.

Joseph Roberts, 21, says he was run down by two HPD officers who hit him with their patrol car on April 16. The incident has left Roberts with a shattered pelvis, broken ribs and is in constant pain.

Roberts was riding in a car with another man when HPD officers tried to pull them over. Roberts says the driver of the car crashed into a ditch. At that point, Roberts got out of the car with his hands raised."

That's when he says an HPD patrol car ran him down, hit him, backed up and then drove over him again.

"I seen the car coming. He ran me straight over," Roberts said. "He ran me over. I was lying down. He backed the car up off me and he tried to hit me again. I was screaming and stuff and they handcuffed me and I was punched in the eye."
