Palestinian Filmmaker Behind "5 Broken Cameras" Detained at LAX Ahead of Oscars

DemocracyNow.org - A Palestinian filmmaker and his family were detained at Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday after arriving to attend this weekend's Academy Awards. The filmmaker, Emad Burnat, is nominated in the Best Documentary category for "5 Broken Cameras," which documents the growth of a resistance movement to the Israeli separation wall in the West Bank village of Bil'in. In a series of Twitter messages, the filmmaker Michael Moore said immigration officers told Burnat he would not be allowed to enter the country even after he showed them his Oscar invite. Burnat and his family were eventually released after Moore phoned Academy attorneys. Moore quoted Burnat as saying: "It's nothing I'm not already used to. When live under occupation, with no rights, this is a daily occurrence."

1. Good for Michael Moore... I hope the rest of this families trip was less disruptive...

3. Because, of course, no Palestinian could ever really BE an Oscar-nominated filmmaker

or, for that matter, a REAL human being.

The only POSSIBLE reason he could have been in L.A. was to BOMB the Oscar ceremony.

Can't possibly admit that they could be decent, non-homicidal people now, can we?

4. Those LAX immigration officers were just trying to be nice......

No doubt they just wanted to make bim feel at home, like he was back in Palestine where,as Burnat points out, the Palestinians have to put up with these types of intrusive interrogations at the numerous Israeli occupier's checkpoints on a regular basis.

That and The Gatekeepers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gatekeepers_%28film%29

8. Watched the entire documentary;

And it spoke much against the way Palestinians are treated, even in their own lands.

Can't have THAT message out there!

9. The message is getting out even in the USA, in spite of Israel's best efforts to keep it under wraps

Future Democratic leaders at Harvard are ‘infuriated’ at Israel, ‘Haaretz’ reports
by Philip Weiss on February 21, 2013 1

Again going where the American mainstream press is afraid to set foot, Haaretz has an excellent piece on the growing disaffection of American elites with Israel, written by Tom Dan, an Israeli at Harvard. (Thanks to Annie and Karen Platt).

“I cannot see one good reason we should continue supporting you guys over there," says Dan's classmate, Will, described as

a devout Democrat, who has participated in two campaigns for seats in the Senate and the House, and is well on his way to becoming a leading figure on tomorrow’s Capitol Hill. Like Will, more and more Harvard students are criticizing Israel.

Wake up and smell the coffee! Dan offers a sharp analysis of the American generational shift, culminating with the assertion that Israel's hamhanded propaganda efforts have successfully aligned the left with the pro-Palestinian community. True.
