Treblinka: Revealing the hidden graves of the Holocaust
Any doubts about the existence of mass graves at the Treblinka death camp in Poland are being laid to rest by the first survey of the site using tools that see below the ground, writes forensic archaeologist Caroline Sturdy Colls.
When the Nazis left Treblinka in 1943 they thought they had destroyed it. They had knocked down the buildings and levelled the earth. They had built a farmhouse and installed a Ukrainian "farmer". They had planted trees, and - contemporary reports suggest - lupins.
But if they thought they had removed all evidence of their crime, they hadn't. For a forensic archaeologist, there is a vast amount to study.
The destruction of buildings rarely results in the complete removal of all traces of them. And even on the surface there are still artefacts and other subtle clues that point to the real purpose of the site.

(27,711 posts)...I doubt we'll ever know the full extent of Nazi genocide. I think many secrets went to the grave. I don't think we'll ever have a full accounting of who died where and how.

(53,949 posts)Of course, being Jewish, I have had more experience with our interactions and treatment at the ahnds of the Nazis. I started studying more about the treatment of gays when I was in college. However, I also know of the millions of others and know a bit, likely more than most; but how much do I even know about the treatment of the disabled, mentally ill, Rom, Russians and Poles, and others? It almost seems each year, something new emerges that is sometimes even more chilling then things already known. It still baffles me how some say it never happened, or wasn't to the extent (meaning lesser) than it was.

(27,711 posts)...is how strong antisemitism, and not just coming out of the I/P conflict, has remained in our society, and how it continues to become stronger. I think it really is quite impressive when you think about it how persistent the emergence of Neo-Nazi hate groups has been in the United States and Europe. The astounding amount of ignorance that goes into one being able to join those groups and maintain its ideology is impressive. That just now these sorts of questions are being asked, shows what a blind-eye we've turned as a society to the suffering of so many. I worry that as the number of Survivors dwindles, and as we become further detached from the past, that such groups will be even more effective in their recruiting.
Oh how I would love to see government go after such groups...

(153,147 posts)usually I do marathon sessions but was unable to do so with this series - I could only do it one episode a week, it was so upsetting. At one point my mind was screaming weren't there ANY German soldiers with a conscience that when they described Albert Battel I paused viewing so I could Google more info on him
BtA, there are SO many fascinating Holocaust documentaries on Netflix - did you see STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME? omg

(202 posts)We seem to live in a time where only video of the incident is accepted as proof. If it wasn't video taped it didn't happen. It seems that reviewing all the evidence and making a conclusion has become to much work.
