The global nuclear order today could be as fragile as the global financial order was four years ago, when conventional wisdom declared it to be sound, stable, and resilient.

In 2004, the secretary-general of the UN created a panel to review future threats to international peace and security. It identified nuclear Armageddon as the prime threat, warning, “we are approaching a point at which the erosion of the nonproliferation regime could become irreversible and result in a cascade of proliferation.” Develop­ments since 2004 have only mag­nified the risks of an irreversible cascade.

Seriously.

The rest of the world was watching when we attacked Iraq, which had no WMD's. Meanwhile we left North Korea alone, which has nukes and a delivery system which might reach the continental U.S. on a good day.

The lesson to every tin-horn dictator is this - "If I don't want the U.S. coming here to whip a little 'Democracy' on me while they take my country's oil and natural resources, I gotta get me some nukes!"

Personally, I've been telling some Canadian friends that their country better build up a nuclear arsenal before some future repub president decides to 'liberate' those Canadians from their 'socialist' government in order to get their greedy hands on the tar sands.
