"Why Do We Idolize Jerks?"

http://www.alternet.org/why-do-we-idolize-jerks?page=0%2C0

"The new book "Ascent of the A-Word" traces our love affair with “iconic assholes” like Steve Jobs, Donald Trump, Mark Zuckerberg and others.

This is an age of assholism simply because we find the phenomenon and its practitioners so interesting — or provocative, or compelling, or compellingly repulsive, or sometimes all of those at once. I’m not thinking so much of assholes of opportunity like Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson, or of incidental assholes like James Cameron or Brett Favre, whose assholism only adds a colorful sidebar to an independently impressive career. There’s little about those people that’s particular to the age, save that in earlier periods the public probably would have been spared the details of the personal tics and twitches that qualify them for the asshole label. What’s unique to our time is the fixation with certain iconic assholes, who exemplify each in his way the problematic allure of the species."

1. I think the pinnacle of "assholism" is Rush Limbaugh's bronze bust...

...on display in Jefferson City, MO.

This is the guy who called out a woman in the national media as a "slut" and wondered rhetorically if she should post videos of herself having sex on the Internet.

I'm old enough to remember that if anyone had done this, they would be gone from the public sphere overnight! It didn't matter who it was, they'd be gone!!!

Not anymore...Now we erect bronze busts in their honor (during a private ceremony, I might add)

Oh, I might also add: the bust requires a 24-hour-a-day surveillance camera to make certain nobody vandalizes it. What a tribute to one of our cultural "icons."

2. Don't forget the time when he mocked victims of the Catholic pedophile priests.

I haven't listened to his radio program since the Clinton years; so, I wouldn't know. But I'm sure there are many other such instances worthy of notice.

5. Thanks for the reminder!

Kind of like when he mocked Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's Disease...

It seems Rush has reached many pinnacles of assholism...

7. For every successful jerk there are thousands of failures

But somehow, sociopaths look at exceptions like Steve Jobs and come to the conclusion that being an ass is the secret of success.

8. You're probably right.

The "nice guys finish last" meme has certainly dominated our culture for a long time.

9. It seems

like the fact that these guys are rich and successful makes them secure from the criticisms a average asshole would get. People worship money too much and everyone of the people listed are on the bottom of the human genome imo.
