CAMP PENDLETON, CALIF. The Marine Corps has created its first law enforcement battalions a lean, specialized force of military police officers that it hopes can quickly deploy worldwide.
The Corps activated three such battalions last month. Each is made up of roughly 500 military police officers and dozens of dogs.
The Marine Corps has had police battalions off and on since World War II but they were primarily focused on providing security, said Maj. Jan Durham, commander of the 1st Law Enforcement Battalion at Camp Pendleton.
The idea is to consolidate the military police and capitalize on their investigative skills and police training, he said. The new additions come as every branch in the military is trying to show its flexibility and resourcefulness amid defense cuts.

(35,300 posts)You see, the militia was the body of able bodied men, "the people."
So when it says "well regulated militia" that just mean "the people, well regulated."
"A well regulated citizenry being necessary for the security of a free state...."
This is just one more bit in making sure that we're alll really well regulated. Hey, it's a Constitutional right, to be well regulated.

(19,326 posts)consider this armed-to-the-teeth mess we have in USA today,
with assault rifles, bazookas, etc. just sold willy-nilly ...
I doubt if they could time travel forward and see the current
sad and terrorizing state of affairs we have, I doubt they
would consider this to be "well regulated".
