4. Loved this part; there are men at DU who try to do the very thing Castellanos
|
Last edited Sun Apr 29, 2012, 08:24 PM USA/ET - Edit history (1) was trying...to interrupt, deny, claim "funny math", and that the wage gap doesn't exist.
Rachel Maddow was correct. The interruption by Castellanos was significant, because Republicans don’t want to talk about the war on women. They have adopted the same position towards the rights of women that they long ago adopted towards issues like poverty and racism. It doesn’t exist. Castellanos was trying to muddy the waters with funny math designed to deny the fact that women earn less than men. Women who work full time earn 77% of what men do. Until today, that fact was not in dispute.
Castellanos tried to use different factors to claim that the wage gap doesn’t exist, but even when all factors are taken into account, 41% of the wage gap is unexplained. This means that when a man and a woman have the same background, are doing the same job, and are working the same hours, women still make less money than men.--emphasis mine |

The whole GOP has evidently been living in a cave for the last 50 years. It's great to have Rachel tell them exactly where they can stuff their faux sympathy and patronizing airs. |

8. Being male
|
anywhere on this planet is a huge advantage.
The power imbalance inherent in the social construct we've labeled 'patriarchy' is damaging to our entire species. How can we expect a 'dominant' gender to respect a 'submissive' gender, when 'power over' is glorified? We women are considered less than because we have a 'v' instead of a 'p'! How absurd! Some great resources for any who wish to change this oppressive socio-cultural reality: The Mermaid and the Minotaur: Sexual Arrangements and Human Malaise by Dorothy Dinnerstein. Beyond Power: On Women, Men and Morals by Marilyn French. The War Against Women by Marilyn French. (BTW, I can play math as well as any 'p' on the planet.) |

21. Exactly....I once wrote a children's "educational" play for a grad class called "There but for Y"
|
It describes the differential treatment of the genders,
while "disguising" the two genders as two groups of space aliens One group is named one thing and the other something else. Without giving away the fact that they are human males and females, They are described as having slightly different body parts which, when put together "fit" to ensure the success and furtherance of the species (e.g. one has a "tail") and I describe how even though this is the case, the one group is given MUCH better treatment than the other and how unfair and oppressive this was to the other. At the end, they take off their costumes and reveal themselves as male and female humans I'm sure it's not "great", but my male teacher liked it ang gave me an A-. |

26. Then,
|
from whence come your question marks? Patriarchy elevates ALL males to 'superior' status, and renders our mythological sky being a FATHER, who sacrificed a SON (long considered the most valuable offspring...wonder why?). I could provide reams of data about patriarchy, but I encourage everyone to read the resources I posted hereinabove, or any of a number of other excellent treatises regarding the dangers and damages inherent in power imbalance.

He goes immediately to 'system justification' for the existence of inequalities.
It's true he also tries to slide the topic from equal pay for equal work, to one of unequal work--men do 'engineering, etc' Classic expression of a deep rooted cognitive motivator and he does it in the first seconds of his response. . |

25. Rachel showed what a condescending a-hole anyone who poo-poos pay inequity is.
|
The guy was a complete jerk which surprised Rachel since they "normally get along so well."
Castellanos says if women are paid so much less then employers would be flocking to hire women. That's simplifying the math a bit too much. But since the guy needs everything simplified, here goes. Women are charged, on average, 30% more for their health insurance premiums. Most employers pay a portion of those health insurance premiums as part of their benefit packages for employees. Hiring more women will most likely increase the employer share of health insurance premiums paid for by employers. Does this make women making 77 cents on the dollar to a make look more appealing as a job applicant? Most likely not. Not only do women get paid less for the same job, many employers find them less appealing because as the chauvanist kept telling Rachel "Men work more" in other words are more productive. And women are perceived as costing more in benefits. Another sick/sad thing is that women without children are subsidizing MEN's children. Women are penalized for being mothers. Women are penalized for being potential mothers. Childless women are paying higher insurance premiums to subsidize children that men had something to do with creating. Women: you're damned if you/damned if you don't -- hell, you're just damned. Don't be a woman. |

Normal business as usual from the gop side, if you have nothing truthful or constructive to add to the discourse just interrupt constantly to muddy the discussion to a point that all that will really be remembered will be the rudeness involved and most will either give up and not listen anymore or forget the gist of the discussion and focus on that.
