March auto sales: Chrysler up 34%, GM 12% and Ford 5% - Good news for U.S. - GOP gnashing teeth

Chrysler’s U.S. sales increased 34% in March, followed by a 12% gain from General Motors and a 5% lift from Ford, as overall industry sales stayed near the four-year high seen in February.

The sales pace met analysts’ expectations, slipping to 14.4 million from 15.1 million in February, which was the best month since 2008.

That year, rising gasoline prices and a slipping economy sent the U.S. auto industry sliding toward its worst auto sales in a quarter century. So far this year, consumers are returning to the market, even though the average gallon of regular unleaded gas now costs $3.92, up from $3.76 a month ago.

“The good news is that the industry and consumers have been very resilient,” said Don Johnson, GM’s U.S. sales chief told reporters and analysts today on a conference call. In addition, “consumers are driving less, and there are many more desirable vehicles in the market that get good gas mileage.”

This is the type of "consumer" spending that actually nourishes the working class in the US.

That conservatives who were salivating at the prospects of the demise of US unionized auto manufacturing are getting conniption fits adds extra spice.
