Harriet Tubman's military service added up to $20 a month

Tubman received no pension.. for her time assisting Union forces. So .. she talked to her congressman.
... from 1899 on, thanks to an act of Congress signed by President McKinley, she received an increased monthly military pension. The initial House bill requested $25 a month. A Senate report on the bill found such a figure would create a new avenue for pension increases and suggested the lower amount that would go into the final law.
That amount: twenty dollars.
