They may as well have been in Kansas.

Two GOP candidates came to Michigan to talk to their voters, to the small number of Michigan voters who wear red, write checks and vote in primaries.

That made it easier for the duo -- in separate venues -- to bash the unions.

That made it easier for the pair to stick by their claims that the auto industry would have survived had it been left to die.

That made it easier for both to bash a president who disagreed, gambled right and is reaping accolades as fast as General Motors is posting record profits.

That made it OK for both to swing with a heavy bat without any regard for or interest in independent voters or conservative Democrats. They came at Michigan -- speeches pre-written -- as if the state were already lost in the fall.

Because it is.
