Neiman Marcus Shop Girls Stab Callista Gingrich in the Back
The ladies who help Callista Gingrich spend thousands of dollars on her unfashionably conservative wardrobe are spilling on the 1-percenter shopping habits of the Gingriches. Callista and Newt are on a first-name basis with employees at the Neiman Marcus in Tyson's Corner, Virginia, BuzzFeed's McKay Coppins reports. Despite their solemn duty to prevent the political wife from embarrassing herself sartorially, the shop girls prefer to lay the blame elsewhere. "Somebody just needs to shake her up, put a comb through that hair, and take a cloth to her face," one told Coppins. If not you, shop girl, then who?
...................
Employees think her style makes her look way older than 46.
Newt just reads a book the whole time.
Callista is nice but "really stiff."

She's definitely going for a "look."

Nancy Pelosi looks better than Calista, and Nancy is approaching 70, I think.

(15,359 posts)I mean, I'm not a great guesser of ages (I usually guess people younger than what they are), but at the risk of being sexist/boorish, she's definitely doing something wrong.

(26,217 posts)Seems like they purposely 'aged' her for the campaign or something. I think she looks great in this photo.

(25,183 posts)Seems to lessen the age gap between her and Noot. Takes some of the sting out of his behavior for a few people.

(26,217 posts)Almost a deliberate attempt to make her look matronly to offset his history.

(15,681 posts)Have you seen Nancy these last few weeks with the new hair style? She looks great!
I had no idea Calista was only 46. My guess would have been no younger than 59. Seriously. All that money and no style to blow it on. Personally, if I were Calista I'd trade in a little of the Tiffany bling for some 21st century style. Okay. If I were Calista it would be 20th century style.

(26,217 posts)I participated in a case study in grad school about Needless Markup. The model they built was based on 'personal shoppers' and tight relationships - not typical retail, full personal valet roles complete with the rolodex.
I am surprised to see current employees willing to open up on a client/customer in this manner as it is truly counter to their entire philosophy.

(1,361 posts)My experience with the store has been positive. When i first shopped there in 1972 in Texas, my sales person was black--this was in 1972 in Texas. I later met a stock boy who was "slow" but Neimans hired him and gave him a good job. Yes it is expernsive but they have treated their employees well, unlike Walmart. Go into Neimans and see how many workers are black and hispanic and they really seem to be pretty happy with their jobs. They get great benefits and only a few are snobish and those few don't seem to last very long.

(21,046 posts)If you know how to shop you can figure out what is overpriced and what isn't. I have bought dress shoes there. Italian made shoes. I have a very narrow foot and cheap shoes don't work. Most of the time I run around in sneakers.
I did buy a Ferragamo purse there once. It was displayed in the shoe department. I put my hand on it and the saleslady noticed me. She told me it was marked down because it was a return.
The rest of the nice department stores are gone. We used to have Sakowitz Bros. It went under in the late 80s. We had Battelstein's. It was bought out by Beall's which is crappy. We had Frost Brothers out of San Antonio. Foley's got eaten by Macy's. Foley's started out as Foley Brothers. Joske's of San Antonio was eaten by Dillard's of Little Rock.
Here's a picture of the interior of the Sakowitz store on Main St. in downtown Houston. Spacious and beautiful. I remember this from my childhood:

The freestanding Battelstein's store on South Shepherd. I remember the partial balcony and staircase:
