Syracuse peace activist goes on trial over protest at Salvadoran embassy

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A Syracuse peace activist will stand trial today on criminal charges related to a protest over alleged human rights violations in El Salvador.
Ed Kinane of Syracuse and three others were scheduled to go to trial this morning over their protest in April at the Salvadoran embassy in Washington, D.C. They held a sit-in to protest what they say was the unjust imprisoning of 17 Salvadoran women.
The protesters were charged with unlawful entry, which carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison if they're convicted.
They staged the sit-in to call attention to a group of Salvadoran women serving 30-year prison sentences for having had miscarriages, according to a news release from the protesters.
