538: The Receding of Sarah Palin In One Chart

Fox News has decided not to renew its contract with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin — the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee’s latest step away from the political spotlight. Indeed, we’ve come a long way from the media whirlwind that greeted Palin when Sen. John McCain put her on the 2008 ticket; Palin’s standing with Republicans and Americans overall has fallen dramatically since then.

Palin’s net favorability rating (favorable minus unfavorable) among all Americans1 has dropped more than 40 percentage points, from +18 percentage points to -24 points by mid-2014, according to a local regression. Meanwhile, her net favorability rating among Republicans has declined more than 55 percentage points, from +83 percentage points to +27 points by mid-2013.

Palin has receded from the national spotlight to the extent that we have very little data since 2012. No live interview poll has asked Americans about her favorable rating in almost a year.

But, she will move to the fringe. (if she hasn't already) A little more visible than Dan Quale. Her speaking fees will go down, and presence around TV will diminish, but never go away. We will see less and less. But I don't think she will go away. Palin will create "blurbs" that will try to keep her name out there. But, less and less and less. I do believe there will be another true clown out in front. There always is.

or at the very least, within the next five years she’ll be found walking around barefoot and disoriented ranting about how she once was somebody. She always was batshit crazy, but some of the videos reveal something worse than just crazy, incoherent, slurring words, wig askew...I think she’s already started the slippery slope down the path of substance and/or alcohol abuse.

You’re correct too, the GOP has no shortage of clowns to take her place.

and I said I can't agree or disagree with her because she has said nothing that makes any kind of sense.
She just strings together a bunch of catchphrases that don't add up to anything.

I added that there were other Republicans that I could understand, and some I could even respect even if I disagreed with them, but she was not one of either of those groups.
