PROGRESSIVE VICTORY: ALEC Ends Its Guns And Voter Suppression Task Force
By Scott Keyes on Apr 17, 2012 at 11:54 am

In the face of mounting pressure from progressive activists and its own corporate sponsors, the American Legislative Exchange Council, a right-wing group funded by corporations like ExxonMobil and Koch Industries, announced today that it will shut down a task force that deals with “non-economic issues,” like voter suppression efforts and “stand your ground” gun laws. ALEC came under intense scrutiny over the past few weeks after progressive groups like Color of Change began pressuring corporations that fund ALEC to drop their support. The Center for American Progress also released a report highlighting the right-wing group’s role in pushing voter suppression efforts around the country. As a result, 10 companies, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Kraft, have pulled out from ALEC.

In response to the exodus of corporate funding, ALEC made the decision today to scale back its operations and focus on “economic” matters. The group released the following statement:

We are eliminating the ALEC Public Safety and Elections task force that dealt with non-economic issues, and reinvesting these resources in the task forces that focus on the economy. The remaining budgetary and economic issues will be reassigned.

This is a monumental move. The now defunct ALEC task force helped usher countless reactionary laws through state legislatures. Most prominent among these are “stand your ground” gun laws that came to the forefront in Florida after Trayvon Martin’s tragic death, and new voter ID laws that could suppress millions across the country, predominantly poor people and minorities.

4. Now is not the time to quit. Double down and run them out of our government. Shine that bright

spot light on them and their sponsors until no one can say their name without spiting the bad taste out of their mouth.

5. voter suppression

is, ultimately, an economic issue. The reason behind suppressing students, old, and lower middle class voters. ALEC is the front line of the class wars.

6. Those issues, while hot button, pale in comparison to the privatization of the commons and cutting

The social safety net that ALEC spends more money on every single day in state legislatures. We shouldn't think it's time to pat ourselves on the back and let them get away with that. Will we be satisfied with this praise and back off, issue over?

Because ALEC is still running, the Koch Brothers are buying up the commons and elections and Rush is still on the air. This week he is disrespecting Michelle Obama, who has the trifecta of disgrace in his eyes, of being a woman of color, a Democrat, and an 'over-educated female.'

And nary a peep. They don't sleep in destroying the country, and they count on us resting from a small victory such as this.

Millions of people are still affected by voter ID laws, districts are gerrymandered to prevent Democrats staying in office, and the GOP is doubling down against Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and environmental protections. The NRA is still doing fine exhorting its members to vote against Democrats.

They must be laughing at progressives, thinking we've won, when the battle is far from over. They are affecting the everyday life of Americans, here is but one example:

11. Are vaginal probes an economic or non-economic issue?

ALEC needs to close shop and experience American unemployment. Now there's a catchy economic issue.

12. THEY'RE SCURRYING TO GET UNDER ANOTHER ROCK

It’s great that public pressure has rattled the cages of some corporations and cost ALEC some high dollar supporters and shook ALEC up enough to disrupt their operation. But we can be assured that although these "task forces" may have been temporarily deterred, they are not gone forever. It worked and they will recreate them under another name. Like cockroaches scattering in the light, they're just running around now looking for another rock to crawl under. They will be back at it as soon as they can get another tax exempt pit established. We have to stay watchful and keep the pressure up in whatever way we can, on whatever structure they have.

ABOUT THAT TAX EXEMPT STATUS: Nothing makes me more angry than the way greedy, corrupt busturds like ALEC exist to scam the public and get the government (i.e., us) to pay for it. Nice work if you can get it, huh?

Common Cause is trying to get IRS to investigate their tax exempt status. What they are doing is clearly not legal but look how long they've done it with impunity. Common Cause has a petition at:

http://www.commoncause.org/siteapps/advocacy/ActionItem.aspx?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=7550265
from that site:
ALEC Exposed: Now Tell the IRS to Investigate
A new website (ALECexposed.org) reveals that ALEC has drafted more than 800 model bills for state legislators – including bills to make it more difficult for citizens to vote, and even a resolution in support of the horrendous Citizens United decision, which opened the floodgates for corporate money in our elections.

Worse, they are lobbying in state capitals across the country, all while claiming to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that they are a charitable organization that does NO lobbying – and therefore receiving certain tax benefits.

13. Doesn't matter, they have already won

So many states have already passed these things that this kind of legislation has its own momentum now. ALEC
has already done its job.
