Claire McCaskill won’t run for Missouri governor in 2016

“It was a tough decision, but in other ways it was really simple,” she said. “I am convinced (my) biggest impact is to remain in the United States Senate.”

She called it a “firm no. … This isn’t a poll-driven decision.”

McCaskill’s decision — revealed on KCUR radio in an interview with Star columnist Steve Kraske — settles an open question in the state’s politics. The former Jackson County prosecutor is one of the best-known politicians in the state, and would have been considered the Democratic front-runner for the post.

But she also faced the possibility of a difficult primary against Attorney General Chris Koster, a primary friends say she was reluctant to pursue.
