Romney Flashback: Poor Mothers Should Be Required To Work Outside The Home Or Lose Welfare
Source: ThinkProgress
In case it wasn’t already clear that last week’s controversy over stay at home moms was entirely manufactured, this should put the question to bed. Romney and allies cried that Democrats had declared “war on moms” after a Democratic strategist said Romney’s wife hadn’t worked a day in her life. Romney’s camp said this meant Democrats don’t value stay at home moms and motherhood, while they believe that women who stay home are doing real work. But for every Romney action, there is an equal and opposite Romney reaction, and this morning, MSNBC’s Chris Hayes dug up a video of Romney from just January in which the Republican presidential candidate said he wanted to require women who receive welfare to work outside the home, even if their children are very young. He told a New Hampshire audience: “I wanted to increase the work requirement,” said Romney. “I said, for instance, that even if you have a child 2 years of age, you need to go to work. And people said, ‘Well that’s heartless.’ And I said, ‘No, no, I’m willing to spend more giving day care to allow those parents to go back to work. It’ll cost the state more providing that daycare, but I want the individuals to have the dignity of work."
Read more: http://thinkprogress.org/special/2012/04/15/464640/romney-welface-moms/ According to the Romney's definition of "work", Hillary Rosen was correct in saying that Ann Romney never worked a day in her life. According to Republicans, staying home to take care of children is only "work" if you're rich.

My house could use some cleaning and a new paint job. Think Ann might be available? I would pay well, but for someone who thinks $350,000 is chump change I couldn't match that.

"...but I want the individuals (if they work outside the home) to have the dignity of work." Poor, poor clueless Mittons. |

8. Just drop the kids off at the Romney's new house while at work
|
They have plenty of room, and Ann is famed as a proffessional stay at home mom now. They'll be glad to help out with that "dignity" thing.
The alternative is to draft grandparents into mandatory service because day care costs as much (or more) per hour as a working mother receives in today's job marketplace. I'm sure Mitt knows that though, he's as firmly connected to the common classes as our signature power lunch of arugula and caviar sandwiches.. |

17. So he sort of agrees with FDR? In that I could agree with him.
|
Before one thinks that his motives are noble, however, I suspect it has more to do with making sure they have an income because he knows that so much of the community - such as payday loan places, banks, and thieving tax preparation places make millions of dollars from those who make some money, but a lot less than he does.
And his only costs won't be daycare, but paying workers to work at jobs which don't exist otherwise. I want to hear him explain that to his buddies. I disagree with the motive, but I can't say that I disagree about the positive effect work, school, something would have on their spirit. Might require them to serve a couple hours a month on a school board, maybe attend a small business workshop and help them get a loan for a cooperative business with their neighbors. There are a LOT of possibilities. They need something so that one day they can give the finger to and be free from the people that have been supporting/controlling them. Welfare is nothing but being a serf to others, completely dependant on their political and bigoted whims. We need to create opportunities that people of ordinary means can take advantage of to use the potential they have. Or we will all suffer. |

in other words, the children of wealthy parents are worthy of having a parent at home, while the children of poor parents can just as well go without...

22. because there is no dignity in raising your own children?
|
Although there is a kind of consistency for once. Since Anne had nannies and servants to do the hard part of the child rearing, rMoney simply wants all women to have some other low paid stranger doing their child rearing as well. So you see, he really is for equal opportunity among women.

Dignity is something that goes with "job" about as well as "spiritual self-expression" goes with "job".

The presumed nominee of one of the two major parties who is so completely clueless about the state of average citizens.
Oh, wait a minute - John McCain, GWB, GHWB, RR... I can only just shake my head while the country sinks lower and lower in the scientific and economic world. I'm glad I'm old and won't have to endure more than a few decades of this horse hockey. |
