Obamas get into holiday spirit at benefit concert

Source: AP-Excite

By STACY A. ANDERSON

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obamas are celebrating the holiday season with "The Rock" and singers Rita Ora and Darius Rucker.

President Barack Obama and his family are attending the 33rd annual "Christmas in Washington" concert at the National Building Museum. The event is a benefit for the Children's National Health System.

Before the concert, Obama, his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Sasha and Malia, presented gifts, including a basket of children's books, to former patients of the center. The six youngsters, dressed as elves, posed for portraits with the first family.

FULL short story at link.

1. How will the ten million people that moved down into poverty during this administration celebrate?

Because the previous administration destroyed the economy and Obama has repaired it, but there's still work to do?

The obstructionists Republicans - are they allowed to celebrate?

Should Obama wear a hair shirt and purge himself? What about his daughters? Is this their fault?

6. You know fucking what? I think it IS a slam that 10 million children and adults are left in poverty

while the banks record record profits. By design.

I can see that quite well.

But I care more about them and their kids, and the fact that most of them will live in poverty for the rest of their lives, not about Christmas parties for rich people.

I won't need to read anything else you write.

12. The thread was precisely about him, actually.

Which might just be why the person you're remonstrating with "can't see that." Maybe you should go and start a thread about what you want this particular thread to be about. There's a potentially worthwhile discussion to be had on the topic, after all. So why not go and start it?

13. You tell me what my writing is about? Do I need to type slower?

I think it's worth remembering 10 million people we are leaving in poverty so we don't have to spend the money and thus things look better for the wealthy. It is deceitful for people to want to have celebrations without remembering that. But perhaps you don't care about them at all, would rather talk around them. We have a whole Congress like that, so there is lots of company.

Here's a how about for you. How about I fix it so I don't waste any more time reading what you write?

Bye.

I was the lead organizer and a co-author of a month-long series of essays by half a dozen DUers devoted to raising awareness of poverty and homelessness and providing carefully researched links and recommendations for people here to take action on these issues. And that was years before you ever got here, so forgive me for saying I find your preening self-righteousness, ill-justified arrogance and lack of impulse control tedious and annoying.

Bye.

11. This response reminds me of the folks from the theater on Broadway who called police on the homeless

folks in the cold outside who, apparently, were bothering the people who had to walk around them to sit in their warm seats to watch...wait for it...

Les Misérables.

It's not about the millionaires. It's about the people.

Some just don't want to be reminded of those who are denied opportunity so the rest can keep their fat bank accounts and too-large homes, in a time when banksters are rewarded for their crimes and American families are denied opportunity, essentially thrown in the trash, so the wealthy can profit from them. And that's this administration's plan, not the opposition. Feel free to read about it in Stress Test, or watch as voters laugh at Timothy "Killer" Geither's face when he tries to spin it otherwise, here..

It's in writing for all the science deniers, so it's hardly worth wasting any time on them now.

5. While I agree with what you are saying. One of my favorite memories of Christmas was in the year

that my father went broke on the farm in the 50s. We went to church on Christmas Eve and as churches did back then as you left the elders handed out Christmas sacks with hard candy, apples, oranges and a lot of other foods in them. The next day we had a small dinner that Mom had been saving for. There were 2 of us kids and no presents. Or so we thought. After dinner we sang hymns and dad brought out a big box of oranges. Oranges were something we did not always get and this was a fantastic gift.

Of all the Christmases in my 73 years that is the one I remember. It was about what it was supposed to be about - love.

9. Thank you. Much of what I share with others here on DU is what went into framing who I am today.

The reason that I am on DU and the reason I have something to continue to fight for.

I wish everyone Happy Holiday. On Thanksgiving I found myself rather depressed - so much so that I did not what to take part in family gatherings. I am going to keep these good memories fresh at the front of my thoughts so that Christmas doesn't turn out the same. Hoping all of you can find joy regardless of our economic mess. This season should refresh us so we can fight again.
