Undercover cops outed, attacked at Oakland protest — 1 pulls gun
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
An undercover law enforcement officer from an outside agency who was attempting to infiltrate a demonstration against police brutality in Oakland pulled a gun on the protesters after he and his partner were outed and the partner was attacked.
The undercover work captured by a freelance photographer working for The Chronicle raised questions about tactics employed by police and protesters as authorities seek to get a handle on rallies that have flooded the streets of Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco, at times shutting down freeways and devolving into vandalism and looting.
About 50 people were marching near Lake Merritt just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when some of the demonstrators began calling out two men who were walking with the group, said the freelance photographer, Michael Short.
... We have received a number of questions about the incident, Frank Bonifacio, an Oakland police spokesman, said in an e-mail Thursday. We are referring all inquiries regarding this incident to the California Highway Patrol.

(7,234 posts)You won't find the words "alleged" or "allegedly" anywhere in the article.
If there is ever a real discussion about police brutality, the media's response to these incidents also need to be addressed.

(1,555 posts)Surely, it couldn't be because of subversive tactics. Golly gosh, that would never happen!

(36,827 posts)The gun also looks like it's SS, which leads me to believe it isn't police issue and might be his own. I wonder if this was even a police sanctioned activity or he was just in the crowd on his own trying to be some kind of fucked up hero.

(359 posts)why the cops are such lousy shots. Holding the gun side ways? He not a professional and should be fired on the spot. His whole aspect looks like a wanta-be bad ass, but with out the discipline required to be truly skilled.

(13,588 posts)In the old days, cops like this were considered rogue and "removed" in one way or another either by the force or by the public. But now we're a country of cowards who apparently prefer the role of victim in a sadistic society.

(2,146 posts)The kid on the bottom called them out and they got mad and jumped the kid for exposing them. The cops didn't get attacked. The thug in the grey jacket threw the kid to the ground and the cracker cop started waving his piece around, like thugs do.

(359 posts)You fire a shot, gun recoils to the side , it is a lot harder to regain your sight picture for the next shot. Try it next time you are at the range.

You lose credibility immediately with your photo. You may have a "cool" sight picture, you've got no sight alignment whatsoever.
If you look upstream in the thread, you'll see a couple more cop apologists; maybe ya'll can meet up at Dunkin Donuts later.
OK?

(4,522 posts)This is going to get ugly. A crowd is not a person - they're playing with fire here and it may turn on them.
Crowds can do unpredictable things, feed off others, and amplify actions. It sounds like the cops were scared shitless (good) - you don't take on a crowd.

(6,241 posts)and the law only goes so far. If enough people are pissed, they will rip anyone apart. Can't arrest everyone. It's just not physically possible.

(14,169 posts)Paid to blend in and then encourage or even start illegal behavior like smashing windows or throwing rocks at (fellow) police. It will usually entice the more dim witted and angry to follow along until the situation is out of control. Then they slip away and uniformed police move in with tear gas and batons. Its become the norm for police now, not just in the US. It helps to present the image of protesters being made up of punks and criminals for the corporate media to lap up and present to the public. And it also helps to solidify more funding for police departments including riot and military equipment.
Many documented incidents including this one where cops had to admit to it. A union rep called them out while one was holding a big rock in his hand.
