Catholic Bishops Urge ‘Campaign’ for Religious Freedom
Source: NY Times
The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops issued a proclamation on Thursday calling for every priest, parish and layperson to participate in “great national campaign” to defend religious liberty, which they said is “under attack, both at home and abroad.” In particular they urged every diocese to hold a “Fortnight for Freedom” during the two weeks leading up to the Fourth of July, for parishioners to study, pray and take public action to fight what they see as the government’s attempts to curtail religious freedom. “To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other,” said the statement, issued by the bishops ad hoc committee on religious freedom. For more than half a year, the bishops have put the religious liberty issue front and center, but it has not yet galvanized the Catholic laity and has even further polarized the church’s liberal and conservative flanks. In an election year, liberal Catholics have accused the bishops of making the church an arm of the Republican Party in the drive to defeat President Obama — an accusation that the bishops reject. 1. And what "freedom" would that be?
|
The "freedom" to keep people who do not share their faith from exercising their own freedom of religion?

15. They want freedom to rape little boys and cover it up and no one says anything.
|
They want to force every american woman to have to have babies. There's no freedom in their
dogma, it's their way or go to hell - literally and figuratively. |

5. The RCC wants to force their religion upon our free nation.
|
The RCC (as well as their "charities") has given millions to the effort to outlaw gay marriage, overturn Roe V. Wade, and indirectly moved to outlaw contraception.

8. Disappointing. I hoped from the title of the thread, they'd be doing something about child abuse.

This is just more propagandizing from the truly godless GOP, despite their attempt to patent the acronym as God's Only Party.
This is political theater, neither the Catholics nor the Protestants are being suppressed. If the religious right keeps on this way, it will simply enrage independent thinkers. And by that I don't mean atheists, either. |

13. Although I disagree with the premise that their religious freedoms are under attack....
|
I'm fine with letting them engage in this campaign when they begin to pay property taxes on all their property. I can only imagine what the property taxes on St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York will bring. And of course they must be treated the same, for tax purposes, as any other organization, albeit as a non-profit. Their members and others, however, can no longer deduct their contributions or gifts to the church from their income.

14. End the Catholic Church's Tax Exempt Status
|
It is time to take away the Catholic Church's tax exempt status!
They are partisan, political hacks, and this is in violation of the tax exempt 501 status. They are also sexual abusers of boys, and have not been rightfully convicted of these crimes. |

16. They want to use tax dollars to discriminate
|
This is their main argument:
"They also assert that the government has violated the religious freedom of Catholics by cutting off contracts to Catholic agencies." While the First Amendment is clear on the whole freedom of religion concept, nowhere in the US Constitution does it say that any religious group is entitled to contracts by the federal government. The bishops want special treatment, and feel that they should not have to follow secular law...but that's the same thought they have when it comes to their cadre of pedophiles. If other religions have to meet legal standards to get federal contracts, then so should the Catholic church. |

Most Catholics do not believe in these things and they do not want the church telling them who they should vote for.
