NEW DELHI (AP) The Indian capital on Monday banned taxi-booking service Uber after a woman accused one of its drivers of raping her.
Transport official Satish Mathur made the announcement as the 32-year-old suspect appeared in a New Delhi court.
The court ordered Shiv Kumar Yadav held for three days for police questioning over allegations that he raped the finance company employee after being hired to ferry her home from a dinner engagement on Friday night. The court also ordered Yadav's cellphone confiscated, according to Press Trust of India.
The case, almost two years after a young woman was fatally gang raped on a bus in the capital, has renewed national anger over sexual violence in India and demands for more effort to ensure women's safety.

Uber also means less income for the driver than a taxi driver makes.

(5,170 posts)Über drivers are commercial drivers who lack commercial drivers' licenses. They have not had background checks and do not carry commercial insurance. They don't have to take a test, as they do in DC and NY at least, to prove they know the city streets. Uber drivers are not even considered employees eligible for such things as overtime, workers' comp for on the job injuries, and unemployment in case they are let go. Uber and its drivers are totally and completely unregulated. This lack of regulations allows Uber to apparently "out compete" cabs. But you get what you pay for, like sexual predators, lost drivers, and potentially too little coverage when you are injured in an accident.
Don't fool yourself, the "tech economy" has very little to do with tech and everything to do with undermining wages and workplace rights. Uber, Amazon, TaskRabbit, and all the rest want to be responsibility-free employers. They want us all to be available at their beck and call without them having to pay us fairly or provide us with a living wage. It's the undoing of the New Deal and the return of serfdom.
